Need advise about car insurance...

Hey guys, I should mention first of all that I'm a novice when it comes to driving and come from a strict non driving background therefore, no very little about cars, which is why I'm here. This post may be long so brace yourselves :-)

I'm a 21 yo male who received his learner permit in July 2013 and have since taken 13 lessons. My driving instructor says I'm fine and all but recommends buying a car to practise with in the months leading upto my test in January so I get more experience. So I've been looking for cars and found some cheap enough ones for 1000 - 1200 with 1.4 litre engines and there about 12 to 13 years old, which is fine with me.

However, the problem is definitely the insurance! Liberty quoted me 3700! I don't no much about cars but isn't that a bit much? I no I'm in the high risk category but I don't smoke, drink am a good driver and would only be using it to drive to college every day. The thing is, Aviva no nonsense, 123.ie etc won't give me quotes unless I've had 1 years driving experience by the time id have that id hold a full license!

So my question is can anyone in a similar situation recommend some good car insurerers that wouldn't quote me for above 2500? If I'm being unrealistic or naive then please let me know. Would I be wiser to wait until I get my full license? How much cheaper would insurance be then?

Sorry for all the questions! Any and all advice would be really welcome so hopefully you guys who know a bit about cars can help me out? Thanks

    Where are you based?

Check and see if your instructor is with First Ireland by following this link.

    http://www.firstireland.ie/DriveFirst/index.html

Pick your county and go through the instructors.

If you find your instructor there, you will eligible for a discount.

A quote from their site explains what it is they do:
All first time drivers who complete a course of 10+ lessons with a First Ireland insured Driving Instructor automatically qualify for a 1 year introductory discount and up to 20% off their first insurance premium.

As a 23 year old female with a 1 litre, my third party fire and theft insurance cost €961 with them.

Hi just to update I bought today a 98 Toyota starlet 1.3 engine and rang the usual insurance agencies like Aviva, axa etc but they wouldn't even insure Toyotas apparently so I tried Chill.ie and they quoted me 2300 which seems fair enough 2 me but I'm not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to this like. Are their any other good insurance companies I'm missing out on that I should try before I commit to Chill?

    Thanks

Will call them thanks. And I'm not sure about 123.ie they might have said something about not quoting people with less than 1 years driving experience but will check again. Thanks guys.

Look in the phone book and phone a few insurance brokers.

All brokers are different so try a few

Hey just wanted to thank you for the suggestion I called them today and they quoted me 1300 for fire and theft which I was really pleased with so thanks. To be honest, I don't think I'll get better than this but am open to any last minute recommendations? Thanks for all the help everyone :-)

Hi I managed to get Campion to go down to 1100 for the year so I'm pretty pleased with that overall so thanks for the suggestion.

Glad you got sorted! I spent a week or more ringing around trying to get a reasonable quote for my sister as she's 18 and on her provisional and they were by far the best quote I got!

    Are you Amish?

It's a bit late but http://xsdirect.ie are good for young drivers.
It's cheaper because there's the option of a large excess (3k) so if you damage your car you pay for the first 3k of repairs.
