Rent Supplement and BTEA

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anybody could tell me if my friend is eligible for rent supplement.

He is living at one of his relations which is overcrowded as there are other relations and family members living there too. He's basically sleeping on the couch.

    He is currently on TUS.
He has been accepted onto a plc course and is starting very soon.

As far as I know he will be eligible for BTEA once he gets the form sent in to them.

Regarding rent supplement - can he still apply for it whilst on BTEA?
From what I've read, on BTEA you may be allowed to retain your secondary benefits such as Rent supplement, but I'm just wondering does that mean that only people who already have it are allowed keep it?
-or can new BTEA recipients also be eligible for Rent Supplement?

As I think they don't accept rent paid to relatives as proof of renting for 6 months, I think he will have to be assessed as having a housing need by the local authority.

How long does this assessment usually take once he has filled out their forms?
Could he possibly be approved for rent supplement within a week?

Thanks to anybody who can help with this query.

Yes he can get Rent Allowance on BTEA. Rhe main issue is since hes not already renting a place he will have to get a housing needs assessment done by his local council.

    Thanks for replying to me.

He pays some rent but I think I read before that they don't accept rent that is paid to family/relatives as proof of renting for 6 months, so yep I guess he will have to do the housing assessment thing.
Anybody know how long that usually takes?

I'm really glad to learn that he will still be eligible to apply for rent supplement after he starts receiving BTEA. I don't know why I thought that new BTEA applicants were not allowed apply for rent supplement.

Anyways thanks a mil for clearing that up for me. :)
