Loud humming while driving

    Hi,

Over the past 2 weeks I've noticed a loud humming while driving in my 02 Peugeot 206sw. It starts when I go over 30kmph and at 100kmph its hard to hear the radio over it. Its like the noise of a plane. Funnily enough, I went up to 130kmph to overtake a truck on Saturday and the noise went away.

It sounds like its coming from the wheels at the back of the car. Could this be the bearings? Is this a hard job to do yourself?

I am a novice - havent achieved much more than changing spark plugs etc.

    Thanks

Are the mudflaps/wheel arch cover touching the wheels? That was driving me mad for months before.

Sounds like a wheel bearing needs replacing. If you've only ever changed spark plugs its not a DIY job for you so you'll need to take it to a mechanic

Thanks. I need to travel to Carlow tomorrow for a wedding, will it be safe to drive over the weekend?

I understand that no proper advice can be given without inspection - just wondering if I can delay the mechanic till Monday.

No one can say man, if there bad enough you can have a bearing collapse totally.

No way of knowing im afraid not sure even an inspection would make a prediction possible. Can you borrow a car for the weekend.

Are your tyres on their last legs? If you can't get to a mechanic soon swap the back wheels to the front and see if the 'hum' follows them.

I wouldn't drive it, if you can take the hub off and then bring it to a mechanic they can use a press to push out and fit the new bearing, thats the only difficult part. save some money on labour...do both sides at the same time

I wouldn't bother doing sides, you'll find that the other side could be fine for many thousands more miles.
    Just fix the noisy one.

You can bring it to the wedding. It's not going to collapse instantly just because Hangsy has condemned it and a few more have expressed doubts. There is also the possibility that it could be sawtooth wear on the tyres.

If i heard it I'd probably drive it myself but i wouldn't recommend someone i don't know that calls himself a novice to drive a car with a loud humming.

This post wins the internet. That is the worst joke I ever heard. I'll make it my business to tell it to as many people as I can...

And did the wheelbearing finally learn the lyrics?

Hopefully so, it's not hard to learn "the wheels on the 206 go round and round, round and round, until the bearing breaks".

Time to do mine. Rear left sounding like a Lancaster bomber for the last few months.

It might be front wheel bearing. when you UNLOAD the weight off that tire humming will go.
