I've made a big effort recently to get 8 hours sleep per night, and it's paying off. Life is just more enjoyable. I've heard of people staying up all night studying for example, I think it's ridiculous, they'd be better off being awake, sharp, alert and productive for 16 hours.

Never sleep for eight hours, most times a good deep six does me.

8 isnt enough for me. Give me a good 9-10 and I'll be happy. If I'm undisturbed on a comfortable weekend I'd sleep for 12. My record stands at about 16, but that makes me feel horrible.

How come you get so little, you are aging your body and mind with that lifestyle.

I didn't realise how much I was wasting my life by not getting 8 hours, without 8 hours I was enduring my day rather than enjoying it. I didn't even realise days could be enjoyed.

nope get about 5 or 6 hours a night, worse at weekend, or if the GF is away then I usually just ... don't sleep really, its a solid gaming or TV binge that can last days. The odd powernap (20 mins max) does.

There is a way if you have the time (and an understanding boss) that a 20 minute power nap once every 4 hours for a few weeks (you must be strict to the 4 hours hence the boss) will reset your clock in a way that thats all you'll need every day.
Uberman Cycle: 20 to 30 minute naps every 4 hours, resulting in 6 naps each day. The uberman cycle is highly efficient, and usually results in feeling healthy, feeling refreshed upon waking and extremely vivid dreams. Many uberman-users report increased ability to lucid dream as well. However, the rigid schedule makes it near impossible to miss naps without feeling horribly tired. Blogger Steve Pavlina tried the cycle for 5.5 months and had amazingly positive results. He only reverted to monophasic sleep so that he could be on the same cycle as his wife and children. Read his articles and updates on the cycle here.

I'd be dead to the world if I didn't get my 8 hours sleep!

Nothing worse than waking up and feeling wrecked.

I think it must be the change in seasons myself as it doesn't seem to matter how much sleep I get this week, I'm still wrecked :(

Shower first thing followed by a can of coke/club orange when I get in to the office works for me. Coffee here isn't great and I'm trying to cut back on the cappuchino's from the shop beside the office. :o

Usually 7-8 hours broken sleep a night. No different at the weekends. Once I wake up, I have to get out of the bed, even if still tired

I need to get at least 8 hours sleep every night or I just feel absolutely exhausted for the whole day. I get annoyed as going to bed earlier won't help me get to sleep quicker either so if I'm up early in the morning and have had a sleeping pattern for a few weeks, it really does ruin the next day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,096 ✭✭✭Reiketsu

I usually get 6 during the week and 7 or 8 at the weekends. A bit longer if my daughter is with her grandparents at the weekend. I don't get up right away then either, just enjoy the fact I don't have to :pac:

Anything less than 4 and I'm a vegetable during the day. Usually get 5-6 hours on weekdays. 8-9 on weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭heretochat

I always try and get the 7 or 8 hours during the week.. Try but fail a lot of the time

Weekends I go for mammoth 10 hours or so..

    I couldn't function on 2-3 hours...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,500 ✭✭✭✭DEFTLEFTHAND

I don't know how people do the powernaps during the day, without taking a sleeping pill It can take me 2-3 hours to fall asleep naturally, even if I'm wrecked.

I used to sleep better it's only in the last few months that I'm finding it hard. I think too much when I'm lying in bed, I could be on the cusp of sleep then I'm wide awake again because I've remembered something else to ponder/worry over.

pregnant & a 1 year old who wakes around 3 times a night ...... what is this 'sleep' thing you speak of

I do miss my sleep though...my husband & I joke about weekends away, without the kids, in hotels with blackout blinds...a sleep getaway...how sad :D

Yeah, new baby, so no.... Just no.
They should invent soundproof boxes for babies to sleep in at night. You'd need a little section to put their rations in and so on but that's workable.

Obviously there'd be air-holes in the box.

    5 & a half to 6 hours usually

Maybe 7 at most at weekends

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

5-6 hrs usually, long as I have one lie in a week I'm grand. The times I do get 8 or more hours sleep I actually feel more tired the next day for some reason. Power naps are good too, usually have one before I'd go out on a Saturday night but you run the risk of a nap turning into a sleep and then not wanting to get back up and head out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Jester252

Had a while where I only needed 2-3 hours a night. Now I get a good 5-6 hours. Heard that 8 hours wasn't good for you and that recommended amount of sleep was 4-8 hours

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,744 ✭✭✭diomed

When people say they sleep only 4, 5, 6 hours a night I remember what I read in The Promise Of Sleep by William C Dement. You can do it for a few nights, but if you run up a sleep deficit of about thirty hours (by getting less than about 8.5 hours a night) you have to make up the difference by sleeping more. The bigger the deficit, the worse you feel, and you will fall asleep very quickly.

Try a sleep deficit of 30+ hours by getting 4 hours a night for 7 days (8.5-4.0) x 7 = 31.5. But you need someone else to do the recording for it to be believable.

Of course people think they only sleep for 4,5,6 hours. How is it recorded?

It is dangerous to have a sleep deficit. You can easily fall asleep while driving, not good for you, not good for others.

I love my sleep. The way I post often reflects how much sleep I've got.... :)

    I usually get 9-10hrs sleep :)

I get about 6-7 hours weekdays and 10 hours if I'm lucky at weekends, usually 8 though due to stupid body clock.

I find I'm wrecked all day but magically around 10-11pm I wake up and find it hard to convince myself to go to bed before midnight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I try and get about 7 hours a night, though anything over 5 and I'm pretty much fine, prefer to get about 7 though. I wake up everyday about 7am and find it hard to go back to sleep, so if I don't go to bed around midnight, I know I probably won't get the full 7. On the other hand, my girlfriend can and has slept for 16 hours solid, and on one occassion, sleeping through her alarm meant she slept until 2pm - alarm was set for 9. I really envy that sometimes.
