Anyone know where I can get an external drive that has a switch on the back to power off. I want to leave the usb in all the time but most of the drives you have to pull the actual power plug out of socket to power down.

I had a verbatim on on order from Peats (now closed) but I cannot find anybody else selling them.

    Verbatim Store 'n' Go 3 TB USB 3.0, €130 @ Komplett.

(Got one myself and can confirm, it does have a power switch)

IF you have a pc turned on and turn on the drive,
or turn it off ,you,ll likely use data ,erase folders, or damage the drive,Theres an electrical connection between the drive and the pc thru the usb cable,
EITHER remove the cable ,use click EJECT remove device icon,
    in system tray,
after 2 mins it,ll say ,ITS NOW SAFE to remove usb device.
    eg safe to remove cable.

    Remove the cable from pc,
or SIMPLY shut down pc, turn off pc, then turn off drive,

You can turn on drive ,,then turn on pc after 6 seconds.
    leave cable plugged in,
or insert usb cable after windows is fully booted up.

small usb drives can just work from usb power ,

I got a 300gig drive from aldi no power unit ,just usb.

    the cable,green icon,
    appears in system tray ,
When windows detects a usb drive plugged in ,

    Sometimes if windows crashes, freezes,
then you will have to remove the usb cable to remove the device ,drive,
eg eject device utility icon will not be usable,
    just
DO not power on,off drive when its connected to a powered on pc , at ANY time,

Pcworld, ,maplins have a good range of drives.

    .turn on drive, first,
    THEN power on pc.

    knock pc off,
    the switch off drive,
that means you can leave usb drive cable plugged in ,if you wish
