Windscreen Polishing?

The windscreen in my car is covered in lots of very fine scratches from years of the wipers passing over it. They are very fine (can't be felt at all) and catch the light from other peoples lights at night making it very hard to see. From the small amount of research I have done it appears that there are special polishes and pads available for doing just this with a DA. Basically is there anyone on here who would be able to do this for me? ( a professional or anyone with the kit) And roughly how much would it cost?

Also, Today I bought chrome/shiny metal sill strips for my car that are also covered in swirl marks and I would like to get them done too.

Crap this is supposed to be in the detailing section! Could a mod please move it?

    Moved.

Interested in this myself. Did a job on my windscreen to remove the grime that had built up. Cleared up the grime and mess, however the tiny scratches in it are pretty evident...not the greatest looking!

You'd probably buy a da cheaper....and you could reuse it on many other cars.

I've been thinking about that as you know but afaik I would need specialist pads and polish on top of the DA Kit, I could be wrong though :)

You need cerium oxide cutting compound to do glass. Last time I checked, cleancar.ie were out of stock (and have been for some time) and detailingshed.com don't have it.

I did this to my car a few months ago. I still have the cerium oxide and the rayon pads to go onto a D/A or rotary.

The windscreen was very bad especially directly in front of the driver. All you could see was scratches but now it's like a new windscreen.

I had thought about just getting a new screen fitted but with rain-sensing wipers, that can be dodgy if the sensor isn't re-gel'd with new gel so I didn't want to risk it.

i had an offer replace vw passat windscreen. 125 fitted new one. wouldnt be it cheaper replace windscreen , than buy expensive tools, pasts , use your own time ?
Probably who has very rare car, might would do , but i would personally replace windscreen .. via insurance or cash.. depends of what insurance conditions.

    Just my two cents...

EDIT: regarding passat (as it goes for sales anyway) i bought used windscreen, 50 €, glue - 11.52 € , beer - 10 € (6 pack) to have with friend, who gave me a hand . at the end saved 55 € , and had great time / evening :)

Replacement screens are not OEM and can often have very slight optical defects. If it were me, I'd be doing my best, within reason (budget), to keep the original screen.

I haven't priced a new screen yet. But I think it might be dear being an import. I could be wrong though.

    Agreed
I cracked my screen in my red vrs shortly before it got damaged.
I requested a genuine screen. It only cost me €50 more.
    Thought it was worth it.

Whatever you do, make it worth your while and seal her up with some G5 (Gtechniq).

Some are. I got one replaced in a Seat Leon. Seat used pilkinton glass originally and the replacement was a pilkinton minus the Seat logo. Most won't be though. Of the 3 I have had replaced that was the only OEM one.

It would be worth checking to see if your screen is the original op. Depending on the age of the car someone else could have had it replaced.

Personally I wouldn't bother buying stuff to polish it if you have glass cover on your insurance unless the stuff was fairly cheap.

The 3 I had replaced all had rain sensors and there was no problems with them after except the last one where the guy fitting it got dirt on the gel but for luck it was less than 10 quid for a new gel from VW

I had the windscreen replaced in my last car under warranty (VW Golf). OEM screen.
Like above, I was concerned it would look obvious it was replaced or that there'd be issues with the rain sensor. I needn't have worried, Autoglass (on behalf of VW) did a perfect job, I would never be able to tell it was replaced.

I thought beeing smart and replaced windcreen last year, so I can have new and shiny instead. What a dissapointment!!! in no time it got scrached and those tiny tine chipstones came up- I blamed the poor quality aftermarket screen and wish I had old OEM screen. I'm afraid what the screen will look in two years time!!!!
