Hello. Reg boardsie going unreg for this. I am hoping to get some helpful advice.

I just want to say I am 29 years old, I had my first job at 13. Other than 6 months maternity leave in 2008, 6 months maternity leave in 2012 and a few months illness benefit due to stress in 2013 I have never ever claimed a cent from social welfare.

My issue is this.....Whilst on mat leave my company made some money saving changes which ultimately resulted in my store manager role being made redundant. Very long story short they caused me untold stress so other than consultation meetings I never returned to work in March when my mat leave ended and I was officially made redundant in may 2013.

I have been searching for a job but no joy so far, I have another 3 interviews lined up for next week. I never went to claim the dole as I thought I would be ok. Now that is not the case and to be honest I need the money. I have two kids and a partner. According to the revenue he is self employed, but his business never turned a profit and for the last 2 years we have been living off my wages when we had them and our life saving. They are now gone and we need to pay our rent.

If I find a social welfare office am I entitled to jobseekers as my partner is "technically" self employed?

Thank you for any advice you may have.

You should have applied in May. If you do not apply ASAP then it can in the future affect your PRSI credits and potentially your pension.

The best thing to do is go down ASAP to.your local office and apply for jobseekers benefit (not allowance)..Jobseekers benefit is not means tested and you get paid it in full for 9 months based on the PRSI credits you have paid. You may also depending on circumstances of your husbands finances be able to claim extra for your children. Because you did not claim jobseekers benefit 4 months ago they may not allow you to claim it and they may make you apply for jobseekers allowance. That is means tested. They will ask for copies of your partners accounts for that. If his business is profitable (doubtful) then you might get a reduced payment. Even if your payment is Zero you should still sign on for PRSI credits.

Then straight away goto to your local health centre community welfare officer and apply for supplementary welfare allowance. This is an interim payment while you are waiting on your jobseekers to be assessed.

If your partner works less than 30 hours a week you might be eligible for rent supplement

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and for the advice. Part of the reason I did not go to sign on was my company did not send my P45 until the end of last week and I thought I had to have my P45 before I could apply. Can you advise on any documents that I need to bring with me to social welfare office?
