I will be moving house soon and will leave my old PC ( an average dell) behind.

I was looking for a possible build or advice.I have never built or ordered a custom PC due to a lack of knowledge on the matter, I was told by friends that its cheaper/better to make 1 rather then going with Dell/CustomPc.

    1. What is your budget? €1500

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming/Internet. Want it to be able to handle newer games at high settings, last a few years.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Nope, leaving it behind for family.

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 24'

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Keyboard/Mouse/Speakers Could pick em up wherever I guess.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Prob not as I don't know alot about it.(Have looked up about it but still too unclear to attempt)

    8. How can you pay? Bank/Laser

    9. When are you purchasing? Anytime in the next month.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Atm Kildare, moving to Westmeath.

I appreciate the time and effort people put into reading/helping.

What? You are either one of 2 things, johnny means well but not a clue.

Or two a troll, to which I say shouldn't you be under a bridge waiting on some billy goats.

Stay away from Dell alienbleh. They are over priced and well limp Dick Mon ami for 1500 they will give you an 800 Euro pc in a fancy case...

    Pardon my french.

Dell alienbeware custom pc and all the other " good value " places are the reason a tread like this even exists.

    Now back on topic.

    Hello Kevin.

Glad you already know to avoid custom pc in fact most Irish sites are rip off , not being mean its just how it is.

I order from hardwareversand.de , it is a legit German company with some of the cheapest prices that deliver to Ireland. Many of the users here use it.

It delivers to Ireland for 20 euro. And if building your own rig "a good experience" is not your thing they will assemble it for you for 20 euro and deliver it made. Hell for 5 euro they will even install windows so you can start up and go.

Appreciate the responses so far. Think I'll avoid the alienware stuff and go with hardwareversand.de but still unsure as to which parts to use. If anyone could give a build I would be very happy.

    Thanks again.

Hey, I don't have the forum template so was hoping for bloodbath to do one. But I did up a build with your budget.

CPU I7 4700k 301 euro Latest haswell chip can overclock if you change your mind , if you want just go with regular I7 4700 which is only 270 euro this is your choice.

Asus z87 pro. 170 euro. You can select a cheaper one if you want. Just ask about them here.

Ram corsair 8 gig low profile 60 euro

Graphics card . Gtx msi 770 twin froz 356 euro.
Good card will run games high settings no problem.

Power supply - be quiet 7 700 w. 80+silver good quality quiet power supply.

Samsung 840 pro 120gb SSD. Solid state drive for your windows loads much faster than a regular Harddrive. 85 euro

    Secondary hard drive..
Seagate barracuda 1000 gb . 56 euro for your basic pictures and music files.

Case ....I'd say fractal design r4 90 euro. again this is your call do you want blue lights and all that stuff choose one and let forum know so we check it fits your build.

This just a quick scetch ,If need more info ask away.

You could squeeze a very nice 1440p build into that budget. Dropped the dvd as if you download the windows 7 90 day trial you can activate it with a key from Amazon. You can read more about the monitor on this thread on this forum. Check the most recent pages.

Cheers for the build both of you guys.

In relation to Bloodbath's build, it may be an oversight on my behalf but can't seem to be able to use 2x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660Ti OC, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort , could be the motherboard? I refer to your superior knowledge.Really new to all this.

Any soundcard I should get? Or any other card for that matter? And if I was to get a dvd drive which 1?

    Thanks again.

Any DVD will work fine, the Samsung one for 17 euro. Will do. You will need it if you buy your games from a shop.

What do you mean? The board supports SLI.

Have selected the ASRock Z77 Extreme3, Sockel 1155, ATX, but only lets me use 1 graphics card, doesn't show the Add.graphics card (SLI/Crossfire) option after I pick any card.

If I used the graphics card that Archer recommended would that be the same? €2 difference.

Kevin if the card I recommended is only 2 euro more expensive damn right you get it.

The Gtx 770 was only released this summer. It is one third more powerful than a 660ti.

Think Audi vs Ferrari. 770 being the Ferrari.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Ahhh I see my bad. was wondering what the hell, 2 660 ti cost same price as 1 770 . Cool. Thought was just one.

I still don't know what you mean. You just order 2 of them.

Sorry wasn't clear, on hardwareversand.de in the pc configurator section.(Using their assembly service.) Only lets me stick 1 card in with the selected board.

If its easy enough to install I guess I could give it a whack.Have watched some videos but would be my first time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

You might as well since they won't fully assemble it anyway. They won't ship it with that cpu cooler attached to the cpu/board and it will be a pain trying to install it in the pc with everything already inside it. It's a lot easier to build it outside of the case and then just screw it in.

Does it say why? Probably some bull**** power supply requirement they make for some reason. Those cards use 135w each at stock speed. The cpu uses 77w. the rest maybe 50w max. That's just under 400w. Maybe another 50w when overclocked. Still miles under 700w.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 KevinOK1

Cheers Bloodbath, doesn't give any reason just doesn't give any option for it all.
Your right about that fan says it won't be installed due to its weight.

Is it much more of a pain to just try to install that piece alone with everything else already done or just assemble it all myself?

It's also recommending I use heatconductive paste with the selected CPU that needed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

It's still possible with the back plate hole in the case. It will be fiddly but not that hard. I'd personally build the whole thing myself. It's a good learning experience and it will help you troubleshoot any issues you may have in future. If you don't have time to do it fair enough.

The Cooler should come with some paste. I don't know how good it will be. You could grab a tube or Arctic silver if you want to make sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Yeah in the configuration they won't even show certain graphics cards unless you have selected a big power supply.

And seems they won't duel card if the selected mother board does not have 2 PCI express 3.0 slots :/ what ever that's about.

Kevin I know building a pc might seem daunting, but there are loads of step by step videos on YouTube.

If you can't for any reason. The cooler it is not 100% necessary. You get a cooler with your CPU . If your not overclocking then it will be fine that said Yes it won't be as good as one you buy separate thats a given.

So you could order the build and just add a second graphics card to your basket. Putting a graphics card in is straight forward and again YouTube is there. Just other options

What are your thoughts on building yourself?

Thanks guys will put an order in now, have looked at a few videos, guess I can give it a go and take my time. If I get stuck at all can always consult here again.

Thanks for all the help, really do appreciate it. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it assembled.

the road less taken, Nice ... best of luck with your build. You can't go wrong with the specs bloodbath provided. your games will be looking sweet.

I forgot to mention about the mechanical keyboard. I don't know if you have ordered it yet but there is a big selection of mechanicals for around the same price on ebay and Amazon. There are different features and switch types. Backlit ect. You should look into it more to see what suits you. there's a guide on mechanicals here.

    Hello guys,

Quick update, I have gotten the monitor and keyboard. However the parts haven't been sent yet.
Have been checking the site everyday to see what the hold up was, and was always waiting on 1/2 things to come back into stock.

Just checked again today and I can't find Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660Ti OC, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort anymore. Does this mean they have stopped getting them in? Have contacted them but seems to take ages to get a reply.

    Cheers again, Kevin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Try ringing them. It's a bit of a pain getting through to them but persistence is key.

If you ordered them while they were in stock they should have reserved them for you but no harm making sure. Find out what the hold up is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 KevinOK1

    Cheers Bloodbath,

Just got an email saying they are just waiting on the case, everything else has been reserved.

    Thanks again, Kevin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

    No bother.

Have you been able to test the monitor and keyboard at all?

    How are you finding them?

Glad to hear this, as I was in the same boat as you (ordered the same gpu and case). I'd sent them an email before you, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

I've just been looking up the availability of the case and most German sites are out of stock with no estimated date given. A good chunk of the others are giving dates of more than a week. So it looks like we have some more waiting ahead of us. I don't suppose that they gave an estimated date in their email?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

You could always ask them to change the case to this. Maybe throw in an additional 140mm case fan for the front.

Not gotten any time for the case, so think I'll change to the one Bloodbath recommended.

I've tested them both quickly all looks well from first glance. Will do a better inspection when I get into the new house.(Soon I hope.....)
