Jack Nicholson Retiring

Terrible news if true. Probably my favourite actor of all time tbh. Unlike Pacino and De Niro he didn't accept every and any role in the latter part of his career and damage his legacy. He's made very few films in the past 15 years - only seven. What is a shame however is that he, just like the mighty Gene Hackman has allowed his final role to be in one of his worst ever films. For Hackman it was the appalling 'Welcome to Moonseport' and for Nicholson it will be 'How Do You Know' - pretty awful rom-com staring Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson. His role in it was quite small and only done as a favour to his friend James L Brooks who also directed him in the classics that earned him two of his three Oscars - Terms Of Endearment and As Good As It Gets.

The obvious and lazy criticism of him is that he plays Jack in every film in the past 20 years or so but that is nonsense. Films such as The Crossing Guard, The Pledge and About Schmidt proved that. Unlike De Niro and Pacino, due to his enormous charisma and screen presence, was able to make an average film enjoyable almost soley due to his performance. The perfect examle of this being 'Anger Management' imo which without his larger than life performance would have been just another forgettable Adam Sandler film. The same can be said for The Bucket List in my view which worked mainly due to his and Morgan Freeman's performances and chemistry. Even when he did sort of play himself it was always highly entertaining. I am no fan of rom coms but found 'Something's Gotta Give' hugely enjoyable largely due to Jack. De Niro and Pacino would be my two other favourite actors but the difference is I can't bring myself to watch most of their recent output as they just phone it in. His best work in the latter part of his career for me was 'The Departed'. Some may claim he was too OTT but I loved the way he played the role with a large amount of his performance being improvised.

He has to be one of the most quotable actors of all time both on screen and off. One quite that sticks out was when he was asked if he takes viagra often? He replied "only when I am with more than one women. So yes". :P

So many well know quotes from films from "Here's Johnny" to "You Can't handle the truth". Loved in 'As Good As It Gets when asked how he is able to write women so well he replies "I think of a man and take away reason and accountability." So many great quotes in that film though.

    Top 5 Nicholson Films?

    1. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
    2. Chinatown
    3 The Last Detail
    4. As Good As It Gets
    5. The Shining

Honourable mentions to The Passenger, A Few Good Men, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Pledge, The Departed, Wolf, Ironweed, Batman, The Border, Witches of Eastwick The Crossing Guard and Prizzi's Honor,

I presumed he must have retired when he turned down roles in both 'Last Vegas' and a role as'Robert Downing Jr father in 'The Judge'. He was hilarious at this year's Oscar's when he approached Jennifer Lawrence.

One of his most memorable moments.

Jack Nicholson retirement rumours denied: 'Reports are 100% false'

Jack Nicholson has not retired from acting, a source close to the star has claimed.

Gossip website Radar Online had previously alleged that the Hollywood legend had gone into retirement due to memory loss issues

However, an unidentified insider said has since told NBC News that the reports are "100% false".

The source also stated that Nicholson is "actively reading scripts and is looking forward to his next project".

Heard it on the radio there.

One of the greats, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is as flawless an acting performance as you can get.

Only got big into films maybe the last three years and maybe have seen most his films, truely spectacular and should always be mentioned up there with De Niro and Pacino as one of the greatest of his time. One flew over the cuckoos nest is one o my favourite films of all time.

I don't get why people would be so saddened if he is retiring. Like Sean Connery, Al Pacino, De Niro etc all great actors in their day but they are all dinosaurs at this stage and well past their prime.

Nicholson didn't go down the route of being in loads of crappy paycheck movies like De Niro though so it's kinda of a rarity to see him in films these days, he's only made 2 films since The Departed and that was what 7 years ago now?

I like when he played that eyebrow-arching guy who cracks wise all the time.

    What was that one called?

Hmm, I think that first vid in the OP has had the wrong effect, it has merely reminded me what a lovable doofus Jennifer Lawrence is. She seems so dorky, it's hard not to like her.

Oh, right, Jack Nicholson. Well although he has featured in some recent clunkers such as The Bucket List, by and large the man has maintained his acting legacy by staying away from the kind of muck DeNiro & Pacino are happy to appear in.

That said, I've never thought of Nicholson as a man with a particularly wide range; a lot like another contemporary, Sean Connery, he tends just to play slight variations of himself. His sheer charisma has often made up for any lack of apparent flexibility, and I don't think people could ever call him an acting chameleon.

He's no Gary Oldman that's for sure. But I like Jack,he's Hollywood royalty and generally seems like he doesn't give a fuck. Who wouldn't want to go on the tear with him :pac:
