hi all. just in the process of building a slatted shed. its 4 bays long. 3 of the bays have access to cubicle houses however the last bay will not have access to any place only constantly in the pen. i will have a feed barrier at front and was thinking about putting a low wall at the back which i could hang a feed trough off of. was thinking about making this out of 12 inch polypipe with 3 or 4 steel brackets on it to hang off wall on outside.

if i had say a 2 foot wall at back( with trough hanging off) and roof sheeted down to within 6 foot of the ground would i still need a shutter here to stop wing blowing through the pen or would these cattle be ok.

Depending on what is going into it(sounds like weanlings) you could increase the height of wall to 30'' or more. The higher it is the less dung that will get ito trough. Have seen farmers nuild these up with either blocks both side 18'' wide and make a trough at top. Have seen them over 3' high as long as animals can get head in. If you have different height of animals feed back first of all bigger animals will feed there and small cattle at front.

A bar 14-16'' above inner wall will help to keep clean but allow weanlings to eat out safely. keep trough inside shed and if it is exposed to wind and rain you can make a shutter door that you can close after feeding as ideally if shed if facing right direction( north or north east) then this will be exposed side.
