The VW interval is 180,000km or 4 years, whichever comes first.

So I have a 2008 manual mk5 gti with 76000k on it. The timing belt hasn't been done as I thought it was based on mileage and not due for a while?

The interval includes a time limit as well as a mileage limit because the belt is made of rubber which degrades over time regardless of mileage covered.

To be honest the 4 year interval is very conservative and the belts on these 2.0TFSI engines are good for at least 5-6 years if not more.

I'd trust Georges opinion over a user named "no smoke no poke" :D

Individual dealers often use their own discretion rather than following the official factory intervals.

All I can tell you is that the VW recommended interval is 180k or 4 years.
