I know that this issue has come up in the past, but with the new 'mytcd' I am worried that I will get locked out of viewing my timetable or something. I paid for everything except for the €8 USI Levy, do I have to pay this?

You can pay the fees in installments, so as long as you have half paid before you register you'll be able to access everything as normal. You're suppose to pay the rest by the end of January, but last year I forgot I owed 20 euro and didn't pay it until a month after the final deadline, it didn't have any consequences; I wasn't even charged a late fee.
It might be like library fines though, I doubt they'd let people graduate with any outstanding fees. Might be best to look for an occasional way to op out but you can safely put off paying it for now

I think the OP is asking about abstaining from the USI fees altogether on principle?

My understanding is that this is indeed permitted, I'm not sure how one is supposed to go about it though.

I too would like to abstain.

They asked if they would be prevented from viewing their timetable by not paying it via my.tcd - they won't, not this academic year at least. But I did mention this could cause problems and to look for an official way to opt out.

    It's an optional charge

It won't stop you from seeing your timetable, but it may be worth emailing someone in College just in case. They usually withhold your exam results if you haven't paid in full, so they may have to remove the charge from your account manually.

I'm sure it is...for those who use it. Not fair it should be mandatory for those who won't.

I honestly try not to think about the fact I've paid over two hundred euro on a building I've never set foot in.

I wonder though if someone physically can't use the gym, say they have a long term illness or disability, can they opt out of paying the sports levy?
Not planning on faking an illness or anything, just curious

You can apparently opt out if you have circumstances that warrant it. No idea how though.
