I failed to close and withdraw the money from my US bank account before I came back to Ireland so I will get caught with a charge for transferring money if I do so.

But can't I just continue to use the card when shopping and that until it runs out. Am I right in saying that I won't get charged any extra this way??

Maybe the only way to keep the entire amount is to leave it REST there until next year when I go back. Couldn't get to back due to labor day on monday!

Are you not going to take rustedtrumpet up on his kind offer?

    Seems legit.

Why do people even bother exchanging money when you can just use your card and it does the conversion for you?

Maybe link it to your Paypal account and pull some of it that way, or spend on eBay or places that take Paypal.

    No.

Assuming you use your card to make purchases in euro and your US account is denominated in dollars, then every purchase you make will incur a foreign exchange charge.

On the other hand, if you close your US account and transfer the balance to Ireland for deposit to a euro account, you will incur (a) a foreign exchance charge, plus (b) a charge for making the electronic transfer to your Irish bank.

The thing is, the accumulation of small foreign exchange charges mde for all your credit card transactions could easily exceed the single foreign exchange charge plus transfer charge that you will incur if you close the account and transfer the balance to Ireland.

Plus, by simply running off the balance through a series of credit card transactions, you're taking an exchange risk - the dollar could move against the euro. This could go either way, of course, so it could either cost you money or save you money. But it represents a risk you don't need to run.

Keep it and use it as a US paypal account.

Very handy to have an Irish (€) paypal + bank account and a US ($) paypal + bank account.

Transferring between paypal accounts is very cheap.

Remember that American Express isn't accepted usually in Ireland at shops. Most places accept Laser, Switch, Maestro, Mastercard and Visa though
