A new London skyscraper dubbed the "Walkie Talkie" has been blamed for reflecting light which melted parts of a car parked on a nearby street.

Martin Lindsay parked his Jaguar on Eastcheap, in the City of London, on Thursday afternoon and returned to find a member of the public photographing the vehicle.

Speaking to the BBC's Alex Bushill, he said: "It's absolutely ruined. I've been told the damage is about £1,000."

I wouldn't have thought a grands worth of damage is enough to "absolutely ruin" a jag, but there you go.

    Bloomberg

    For Boardsies Down Under

"I thought it was hot in Turkey but this is amazing," said Ali Akay, manager of a barber shop opposite the skyscraper.

And the obligatory Daily Mail Link.

Yeah I saw this on the news earlier. Apparently it's due to the convex shape of the building coupled with the downward curve that concentrates the sun's rays on to a spot below and makes it reach ninety degrees centigrade.
You wouldn't want to park a pram there.

    "oh crickey?"

Is the south of england still producing the kind of chinless wonder that says "oh crickey" even in this day and age?

No, but a few market traders near that building sell fireworks from prams in the run up to Guy Fawkes.

They fried an egg on the street yesterday at the point where the sun reflects down to the street. Also, a section of carpet at the front door to a hairdressers was smouldering from the heat and outside the shop, paintwork had blistered.
