iPad (1st Gen) Not charging Properly

I have a 1st Generation iPad that doesn't charge properly. When I plug it into the charger, it doesn't always start charging. When I restart the iPad while it's plugged in, it usually starts charging as normal. When plugged into a PC, it isn't detected.

Any ideas what causing this?

    Cheers

What kind of charger are you using? Some PCs don't give out enough power to charge the iPad so it helps if you're using the original Apple one.

I'm using an iPhone charger, it should still charge but at a lower rate, which it doesn't.

The PC doesn't detect the iPad when it's plugged in (doesn't show up in iTunes).

Try an iPad charger, there are more powerful ones available from Apple. If that doesn't work, maybe a trip to Apple is in order.

I've already tried another USB cable and a 2A charger and the iPad still doesn't charge (unless it's restarted while plugged in). The PC still can't detect it even with a different cable. I've also reset the iPad with no change.

The iPad belongs to a family member and they've been recharging it with a non apple charger.

I'm still no closer to fixing it...

If it's an original iPad a few years old, the battery could need replacing. They have a finite shelf life and some last longer than others.
