Irish Champion Stakes/Saturday

Looks a good day's racing at Leopardstown Saturday looking at the early entries.

This race looks a cracker even if O'Brien has most the field. Have been very keen to see Al Kazeem exposed as over rated all season and think he was put in his place last time and wouldn't be too keen on him this weekend.

Dec of War may have won the Juddmonte and has to be respected and will probably run his race again, but at 10/1 I think a freshened up Magician could be a massive each way player. Thought he looked very smart winning the Irish Guineas and his price is massive especially when you see Kingsbarns at half his price, with Camelot around 10's too. May have a nice each way bet today, but not the biggest fan of ante post rules

Has O'Brien confirmed Magician will run?

Personally I don't think he will.

Al Kazeem wont run on that ground anyway. Firm, Good to Firm in places at the moment.

Would be shocked if Magician ran. Will be a shootout between DOW, The Fugue and Trading Leather unless weather changes for Al Kazeem. I'll be on Gosden's if it turns out that way. Seems to be right back to her best.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,335 ✭✭✭✭UrbanSea

Magician comfortably held Trading Leather albeit over a mile, not sure there would be all thy much between them. Won't be near 10/1 on the day should he run if Al Kazeem, CDA and probably Camelot defect. I wouldn't say I'd be shocked if heran think he has a fair chance of turning up, I'd fancy him to turn up ahead of Kingsbarns, would be some training performance to have him competitive in this

Smashing race, O'Brien's to take with whatever he runs which is the problem, what will he run? Ruler Of The World and Magician would have both have chances if they ran, ROW in particular would be well suited by the likely very strong pace set by Trading Leather. A pace which would probably make Magician more of a place prospect than likely winner. While DOW is now a very decent price if he's to be the sole serious Ballydoyle contender.

I'd be waiting for the final decs before getting excited about this O'Brien horse or that one.

Couldnt have ROW myself fwiw :)

    Two words, Ryan Moore :)

Unlikely to be there :(, although Seamie on a good day :pac:

    The Fugue the solid option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,931 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

It's hard to see anything other than an O'Brien horse winning this. You'd have to think Al Kazeem won't be running. I can't have The Fugue as second favourite. I think I will go with either Camelot or Ruler of the World - assuming either runs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,702 ✭✭✭tryfix

Quite a shock that Kingsbarns and DOW are likely to be O'Briens only runners, what's the story with Kingsbarns, pacemaker, also ran, real winning/place prospect?

Thank god I didn't go in on Magician was tempted today. Would be a bit like High Chap being brought back to win this

Edit no think High chap had a run before it that season

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,873 ✭✭✭RichieLawlor

If the ground stays as it is I think The Fugue will murder them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Couldn't agree more. She won unbelievably impressive lto.

    Trading Leather

Heavy rain expected in Leopardstown over the next few days, if it comes I'd say Al Kazeem and Kingsbarns will run.

    EDIT - wrong place.

They would have to run it in the curragh to so. ;-)

Al-Kazeem is 3/1 with the bookies at the moment. Snap that up, because it will be shorter come Saturday morning.

If the rain doesn't arrive he won't run.

    Kinsbarns the dark horse.

Surely the easy option would be to leave him off until next year.

They wouldnt run him hoping he'll run into a place. They wont run him in a race like this if they think he has no chance. Coming last in a race like this would look terrible, eh ?

My guess: he's working unbelievable at home. Burning up ze gallops, clocking up serious times working with serious animals ! DOW will be pulled if the rain arrives. Kingbarns to destroy the field by 5 lenghts !!!!

Mount Nelson! Highly thought of 2yo at Ballydoyle, got injured early in his 3yo career. Came back to run at Newmarket in Champion Stakes in October and got absolutely stuffed. Returned as a 4yo to win The Eclipse.

He'll be out to blow away the cobwebs tomorrow imo. Would love to see him win it tho, prob be the highlight of a very very poor flat season so far!

    Ha ha yeah fair point.

I think they rate Kingsbarns more highly than MN though after the way he won at Doncaster. Of course the usual Ballydoyle spin was to be expected.

He was 9/2 earlier in the week. Was way to big. Getting into a realistic price now.

That other fillies and mares group 1 on the card is probably the worst group 1 I've ever seen. Most if not all of them would struggle to get competetive in a good group 2/3.

It was more than fair given he didn't look like he'd run.

With Elusive Kate out it's a poor matron. Had a bet on Wannabe Better at 25s which looks massive think she is improving at a rate of knots and could see her sneak a place

Lordan must be getting a helicopter from Haydock to Leopardstown. Declared to ride Slade Power at 15:50 and Wannabe Better at 17:45.

With the time difference that shouldnt be an issue.

Still 11/4 on Ladbrokes, won't last though.

That French filly Kenhope has decent GP1 form, finished just a short head behind Duntle in Elusive Kate's race in France.

Duntle would be well fancied here if she was running!

They made a lot of noise about Mount Nelson too in the press day before his 3yo season, I remember Fallon sayng he'd get the Derby trip 'on his head' and that he was a real contender. I think he may have been a G1 winning 2yo also.

As for the Matron, I couldn't back the fav given the draw (10 of 11) and the fact the jockey is not familiar with the track. It can catch jockeys out, anyone remember Soumillon and Moore two years in a row on Cheveley Park fillies making an absolute mess of the Matron. It may actually have been the same filly both times.

    Awful race tho.

Beautiful evening here in the Midlands, so the chances of a deluge before morning in Dublin are slim, unless it's going to come from some other direction.
