tractor tax

Does anyone know the current rules about taxing a classic/vintage tractor i.e. is it taxed at the same low rate as a classic car? I assume that if it is taxed as a vintage vehicle it is perfectly OK to take it on the road.
Reason for asking - thinking of getting a T20 Fergie just like my Grandfather had! Why did I ever sell it??!!

Yes you can tax in as vintage as long as its pre 1980

Costs €55. My tractor is 1982 and is taxed and insured for the road.

Thanks for the info. As one of my boundaries is the border I might just "register" it in the North - no tax at all on tractors there, vintage or not !

It is actually dependent on date of registration and is anything older than 30 years.

Need to register it in the South.

A visit to your local NCT centre beckons.

How much is it to Tax a 1982 Tractor???

Also is it true that if you transfer the ownership of a vehicle now before the 30th September the new owner will not be liable for the back tax on an untaxed vehicle, should a person be found on the road without the vehicle being taxed after the 1st October??

Vintage tax is applicible in that case - approx €55.

Any new owner would not be liabile for any back tax on a vehicle before it came into their possession.

If you intend NEVER to go on the road with it, declare it off road for a year. Form RF150, Form RF100A,

Tax is €102, unless your tractor is a classic/vintage. In which case its €55.

If you are caught on the road, while having declared it "off the road" then €60 on the spot fine, and possible confiscation.

If you are taxing it at the €102 rate, fill out the RF100A form, and get it witnessed by your local friendly Guard. be prepared for a wait in your local tax office.

Farmers have until the end of September to declare that their machine has been off the road, by getting a completed RF100 form stamped at their local Garda station and providing their vehicle registration certificate or logbook.

You sell it to your wife/brother/who-ever when you ARE ready to tax it. Then they sell it back to you and your away and free of any back taxing.

This is going to be happening alot

So if you just go in and tax a tractor hasn't been taxed, you will pay back tax for the number of years you had the tractor?
Unless you get the form and have it signed as being off the road?

    Correct.

Or if you are on the road with a tractor with no tax and get stopped, you will also have to pay back tax.

I know we are all focussing on tractors here but the amount of cars going around with 3 months tax and then "off the road" for three months is at a staggering high level too.

This should curb this practice too.

But if I buy a tractor that hasnt previously been declared "off the road".. Surely I'm not liable for all the back tax then ???

Just make sure you get the tax book!

I bought a tractor ten years ago from a garage, have the tax book but never taxed the tractor. It is still registered to the previous farmer that owned it. I assume it's too late to register it in my name and tax it now before the end of the month?

"Correct I'm liable" Or "Correct I'm not liable"? :o

It may be but would go ahead and do it anyway once it is in their system by September 30th.

My understanding is once ownership transfers no liability is transferred.

Be interesting to see what they do about the back tax!

Hi I bought a small tractor new back in 2004 and never registered it.
What should I do to register it now. I tried to book it online with NCTS but there are no available dates or times before end sept. in my 2 nearest test centres.
Should I try and declare it off the road before end of the month and then
try and register it later or is that not an option?

I don't think you can declare a vehicle "off road" if it has never been registered. Out of curiosity, how did you buy it from a dealer without them getting number plates allocated to it?

I told them it would only work in the forest but have many uses for it since.
I also rang said dealer and asked him but he said it was too long ago,so feck him

You can probably tax it for the first time, but I would imagine your dealer will have to provide you with some sort of docket or receipt. He was good enough to take your money at the time, he should be good enough to get you a bit of paperwork now. Might be worth ringing Shannon to enquire before the end of the month.

I was waiting in a college car park recently and had to wait a few hours as I was walking around the car park not being nosy or any thing but couldn't help but notice that 1/3 of the cars had out of date tax some 6-7 months.

Some of the seasoned motor tax dodgers think they can use this as a loophole to dodge tax in the new system transferring the vehicle between different family members.

Do it too many times and surly it will ring alarm bells

Besides that if they are caught driving with no tax after the 1st of October there will be no excuses and they won't be able to run to the nearest Garda station to get the form stamped to avoid back tax :)

What is the story if tractor has no number plate or log book...hav no idea how old tractor is and no proof of ownership...its a "passed on" tractor

If you don't intend putting it on the road ever again no need to do anything. If you do you need to ask at your local tax office as soon as possible as the deadline is approaching fast ;) if it goes after the deadline you could transfer to another family member to tax it without having paying back tax.

The machine has to be at least registered

It is no difference and only correct that it is being clamped down on but don't be surprised to see a charge for off the road next year....
