Staying at home by yourself

I am a girl in my late 20's and we've recently moved house to be nearer work, my partner does a lot of 24 shifts and can be away and there's been a couple of break-ins in the area and estate and it's really playing on my mind! I'm losing a lot of sleep thinking I can hear things, we have an alarm and 2 small dogs but I always fear someone will break in when I'm by myself. Always exhausted heading to work the next day!:(

    Anyone out there like me?

Yup, I hear ya. Fortunately never have to stay on my own all night but not a big fan of going to bed with the light off when I'm home alone even though the alarm is on and the dog is asleep on the floor beside me.

I do take comfort in the fact that even though she is a small dog and would be useless if anybody got in the house she would hear the grass grow and it does give me comfort that if she's not bothered then there's nothing for me to worry about.

In relation to the break ins try not to let it bother you too much as chances are 9 times out of 10 any area you look at has probably had a few break ins recently.

I know people who won't stay on their own, ever, at night, if a partner is going away they will have someone come and stay with them. I personally have never had that problem, don't get me wrong I live around some unsavoury characters so I am always careful but I don't ever worry about someone coming into the house because when you do you are just stressing over something you can't control.

Lock up the house good and tight, having dogs is always a good thing, 1 it's company and 2 they have excellent hearing. Read a book and try and put it out of your mind, maybe leave on a radio so that you are not listening for every little noise. You also have an alarm so that's another good thing. Also maybe try and bolster security at the back of the house, perhaps a couple of security cameras, or even sensor lights if you want to keep costs down. It's all about deterring criminals. And remember that theives very rarely want trouble and usually won't try to enter the house if they think or know that there is someone there.
