Looking for a 2011 petrol car

I currently have an 06 Focus petrol model and I want to upgrade to a 2011 petrol Focus but I'm finding it hard to find any in the North East. Local garage has a 2012 Volkswagon Golf 1.2tsi petrol for sale. Has anybody any expierence with them. I've read good and bad reviews.

I do very little mileage maybe 20 km per week so I don't need a diesel.

Why is it so hard to get petrol cars post 2011?

Low enough selection down here of petrols as anyone buying new is convinced that they need a diesel with as tiny an engine as possible in it, regardless of whether it's suited to their driving pattern.

If you're in the NE, I'd say hop over the border to be honest.

What are people buying these days when they don't do a lot of mileage? Are they buying diesel cars and hoping there will be no issues?

    Essentially, yes.

At the risk of asking the obvious do you need to own any car, let alone a newish one? Your costs per km are going to be astronomical.

I can walk to work but need a car at weekends for getting grocieries, visiting relatives/friends, visiting recycling plant etc.

I suppose by "north east" you mean Dundalk. You're not far away from two major cities, have you checked for cars selling in those?

It mightn't be an option for where you live, but taxis would be a whole lot cheaper.

For 20km a week, I would have thought you'd be better off with something more like a Toyota Aygo or a WV Up.

I've looked mainly in Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Cavan. I've looked online for Dublin dealers and there are very slim pickings for petrol Focus' post 2010. I've also contacted a couple of 'car sourcing' garages so hopefully they can come up with something.

For 20km a week you could buy the most alcoholic juice-slurping car in the world: you're not doing enough mileage to make fuel-use an issue at all.

    RS4 ? :P

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I think VW 1.2 and 1.4Tsi are the engines of choice for those that don't want/need diesel. Really nice engines.

Agreed, I would have thought that a Golf 1.2 would make a perfectly decent runabout for the sort of driving the OP described.

Golf is going to be in the garage on Wednesday so will give it a test drive. I had heard mixed reports on the reliability of those engines. Tax is also low on them which is a bonus.

Are you trading in your Focus? Must be very low mileage on it......

So much depreciation per annum for so little miles.

I'll be trading in. There's 78,000 kms on it mainly from the 2 previous owners.

The better half has an Octavia 1.2 petrol 2011 same as in the golf you mention. I must admit its a lovely engine miles ahead of the previous entry level 1.4 petrol on VW range. I was very sceptical when she was buying it due to usual pub talk size of car small engine etc (I have driven the 1.9 tdi lump from VW for 15 years and have currently a 2.0diesel M47 BMW engine). She has around 65k up on the car with no issues and I actually don't mind taking it for a spin even coming down from my own car. I used to despise driving the old 1.4 petrol she had. The 1.2 is relatively lively and while it won't break any records is nice on normal driving. It does around 45miles per gallon on brim to brim test in relatively short trips on country roads i.e. 20km to and from work around town etc. Motorway runs a bit better but not much to be honest as engine works a little harder. To be honest it out does my MPG on the diesel but mine is a 2004 and is driven harder.

I'd be inclined to agree with those asking if you need a car at all, let alone change it.

On a 2011-12 car, the biggest expense (by a country mile) is depreciation.

Ah I wasn't thinking of age just no need to worry about fuel cost. Like I need a big van and do about 300 urban miles a week
