There was a Garda speed check on the M8 near Watergrasshill yesterday, not for the first time, tripod jobby, which meant offenders had to be pulled over on the hard shoulder.
What ever about the legality of this, surely it's bad policing putting both the Garda and the motorist in serious danger in this situation.

What time was this? I drove the M8 yesterday and saw nothing? Would they be going after high-speeders say >140km/h or just shooting fish in a barrel and nailing the first lad to come along doing say 125km/h?

If it's a tripod job, there's no need to pull you over. The tripod one's take your pic.

Is it the hairdryer out the window where they must follow you and pull you over?

What - the legality of stopping speeding motorists?

Given the propensity for people to drive at 160km,/h on our motorways this is no bad thing. I was on the M8 a couple of weeks ago and encountered same speedtrap; I thought it was unusual as I'm more accustomed to seeing no speedchecks on regular M1 trips

Because you brake suddenly to avoid getting a speed fine?

stopping on the motor was is hazardous. I dont know how many ads/news stories there is warning people of how dangerous its is to be stopped on the side of the motorway.

The gardai have specially designed laybys for speed traps. No need to put a hair dryer to check speeds and put peoples lives at risk

Money > safety .. despite what the ads would have you believe.

I know the M8 pretty well and it's probably the quietest motorway in the country. Absolutely no reason for speed checks on it except for bringing in the cash.

Also, 140 km/h is far from excessive on such a road IMO.

coming downhill into cork its windy and has a lower limit of 100km/h for the past few years.
Its also FAR from diserted on that stretch seeing as its a commuter run into cork city and not intercity traffic like further up the road.

M3 north of Navan would have to be a contender too.

I still don't see any need for a camera on that stretch of the M8 - it's not the M50 or even the M/N3 we're talking about.. only place the traffic builds is immediately approaching the roundabout/tunnel or on the far side of it approaching/passing Mahon Point, but seeing as this trap was on a Sunday (from the OP) that probably doesn't apply here.

I mentioned about something similar on the M18 over in Roads:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=85866767&postcount=1058

I honestly couldn't believe my eyes to see a guard(in my rear view mirror) step on into the middle of the lane 1 with his hand in the air to stop a speeding car.....on a motorway....so a car probably doing over 130....

I'll answer a few of the above.
    Time 12- 1.30 pm
    No layby.
Lone Garda/Vehicle on hard shoulder, although it's a little wider at this spot.
Garda using hand signals to stop and direct motorist onto hard shoulder.

I got caught there a few weeks back heading towards the Tunnel, they normally camp out between the Toll and the Tunnel just after the Speed changes from 120km/h to 100km/hr, I got caught doing 123km/hr in 100! Do this trip once every week and and see them there quite a bit

Presumably the reason is that the law is being broken there.
