This isn't legal advice for two reasons. Firstly, legal advice can't be given here and secondly, I haven't a clue about the law.

But I've enough common sense to know that I wouldn't let a stranger or somebody that I didn't trust take one of my kids out on their own, anywhere.

Yes, a Social Worker can call around to your house. Yes, a social worker can probably talk to your child alone , but there's no way they can take the child out of your house for a few hours without one of two things:- your permission or a court order.

I'm sure that if I'm wrong, some of the legal eagles can correct me on that one.

maybe I should contact a solicitor??

As much as I'd like to tell you the legalities of this, if you think it is something you should speak to a solicitor about then you should speak to one. They can hear all about it, confidentially, and let you know what the rights and wrongs of the situation are.

Tis is definately not on... If there were serious worries about the child then they can question the the child, usually in a health centre etc. and make things difficult if you do not wish the child to be questioned alone, however taking a child out for a few hours does not sound right atall..... The details you give though do not say how old child is.. I would be very very wary of this, in those hours you have no idea how the child is being treated, wether the child is being coerced or manipulated. It does not sound like normal practise atall and I would certainly think to go to a solicitor and also look into the rights you or the parent or whatever has.

Thanks for replies.. I have found out the answer now, and apparently a social worker can ask if they can talk to a child alone, and they usually ask for the parents permission... If the child does not want to go with them and talk the child doesnt have too. Apparently they say it helps the child !!! I wonder.. I am not a major fan of Social workers.. they have let too many children down. Anyway found my answer so feel more comfortable with that. thanks to all .

Jimmy Saville was not a social worker!! And social workers work under a code of conduct and ethics they must abide by also.
