Hiding cables

    Hi Guys

I have some cables running along my skirting board, a Cat5 and some surround sound speaker wire.

What's my best option for making this look neater, rather than badly tacked in hooks?

I was thinking a trunking of some sort, but cheap, nasty white is a bit... well cheap and nasty looking.

Plenty of different things but most are expensive or messy, or both. Like underflooring, or using compartmental skirting etc but if you were careful it might be possible to put them behind the current skirting. Depends how well it is held in place, otherwise you will have to patch plaster work above, which might end up being more hassle than its worth.

Basic option is white mini trucking like you said or just painting them. Use glue or similar rather then nail clips for neater look. Posting a pic of the current setup might get you more feedback

You can normally squeeze cat5 in between the carpet and skirting.

You can paint that mini trunking with normal emulsion if you give it a quick sand to give the paint a key, so if your walls are painted, you can put the mini trunking above the skirting and paint it to match. It'll depend on how visible it is how obtrusive it is.

In addition, if you can remove the skirting board, it's common to find a sufficient gap at the bottom of the plaster boards, as when they were fitted, they were most likely lifted off the floor to get them flush with the ceiling, and then attached to the walls / studs.

I'd take skirting off and put it behind it. If it didn't go down between the carpet and skirting board.

If your taking skirting board of make sure you go along it with a Stanley knife and cut the caulk between the board and the wall this will minaze plaster damage.

I've seen Masking Tape ran over small cables along the top of skirtings, painted to look like the original wall meets the top of the skirting.

Looks ok in an older house where lines wouldn't be as clean. Big drawback would be kids or pets.

Nails or no nails, screws or no screws, painted or non painted,no more nails or no no more nails..............the OP will have some fun taking off skirting boards and not damaging skirting or the plaster.

Alot of TLC,a stanley knife (possibly a screw gun) and some gentle yet persuasive levering with some pry bars is whats needed.......and a little bit of luck too.

I personally don't think its what was used to fix them but what they were fixed to.
Ie sand and cement or skim on plaster board.

Its all down to what the ops situation and room is like how far he does or doesn't have to go.
Op post a picture so we can advise you more.

Paddy the problems you brought up try give a solution of how to avoid or minamose damage going to be caused.

Leccy wholesalers........cream or white coloured skirting board mini trunking........purposely shaped like a moulded part of the skirting board.

Install moulded mini trunking ontop of skirting and it blends in with the skirting board.

Can be over painted too....if needed

Any decent leccy wholesaler will have it in stock.

You can also buy it in Woodies and B&Q...if you feel like paying more for it.

You can get a moulding to match your wooden floor or in white to match the skirting, most of these have a gap at the back that you could run your wires along.
