Worst lie ever

Couldn't believe the lie I got today in Headfort New, 14th par 5, just short of the green with my third shot, came down from a height, thought it would make its way to the centre of the bunker.....make that wished it would be in the centre.
Result was about three feet down from the edge of the bunker on a slope and worse than plugged, the ball was actually completely below the level of the surrounding sand, looked like it was there for weeks and just uncovered. No entry sign, just buried
All I could do was chop it and it rolled back to the centre of the bunker.
Made me wonder what other bad lies folks have had.

Wedge to the 15th green in Sillogue a few weeks ago after heavy rain the night before. No bounce, the ball just plopped.

Could you not claim the ball was unplayable and take a drop? (at a penalty of course)

You could, but seeing as you'd have to drop it in the the bunker anyway, you'd be just as well having a flake at it...

17th hole in Headfort New a couple of months ago. Have to admit it wasnt my ball. But I had to take the pic when I saw it there :P

you could have gone back to where you played your shot from that got you into that bunker in the first place.

I disagree with you there. For example I was out today playing with a mate whose handy enough, off 10 but hits it well should be lower really, anyway he ended up in the most horrendous lie under the front lip of a bunker. It was plugged under the lip and really there was no way he could get it out, took his first shot and rams it further into the lip and has a further two bashes before he gets it out. Really if he took his medicine and dropped into the flat of the bunker before taking the first shot it would taken him 2 shots to get out while taking on a stupid shot which was basically unplayable it took him 3 shots to get out...

Different situation. The ball in the pic is badly plugged, but its not rammed under the lip of a bunker....
IMO, its worth trying to advance the ball if you have the chance. ...

Yeah, having a go was the right option IMHO, what pissed me off was I flew the green with my second shot from the bunker as it turned out I got a wafer layer of sand from what appeared to be a perfect lie. So I went from inches of sand to virtually nothing within the space of around two yards. It was a society outing and we were all commenting on the poor condition and variability of the bunkers.

Honestly, I think Headfort has it in for me, here's a lie from Headfort Old on Monday, wasn't sure what to do but rather than take a huge hunk of the course and as it was a casual game I just dropped it in the bunker.
    Ball was "greenside" of bunker.
What would have been my options (if any) had it been a competition?

Looks like a burrowing animal hole to me... ;)

Yeah, it was a burrowing animal scraping okay as there were others in the bunker, but because it was a hazard I was/am unsure.

Here goes *puts protective clothing on*

You can declare an unplayable lie under a penalty stroke.

    3 options:
    1. Play it from where you last hit it from
    2. Go back as far back in a straight line between the flag and the position of the unplayable ball (but you're in the bunker so there's a sub rule that says you have to remain in the bunker)
    3. Drop within two club lengths (no nearer the hole)...you'd have to remain in the bunker for this one as well.

Edit: We could have just scrolled up as it's pretty much covered above.

What's the rule around that n2o?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭n2o

    Under 25.1b(ii) you get relief
(ii) In a Bunker: If the ball is in a bunker, the player must lift the ball and drop it either:
    (a) Without penalty, in accordance with Clause (i) above, except that the nearest point of relief must be in the bunker and the ball must be dropped in the bunker or, if complete relief is impossible, as near as possible to the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole, on a part of the course in the bunker that affords maximum available relief from the condition; or
    (b) Under penalty of one stroke, outside the bunker keeping the point where the ball lay directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the bunker the ball may be dropped.

Copying and pasting from the rules explorer is no fun....

Cheers, was having a look at it there.
I should have really made the (rather simple) connection that it would be classed as abnormal ground

You are. Under the rules of golf, if the ball finds a burrowing animal hole within any hazard, including bunkers, you may drop the ball at the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole while remaining within the hazard, with no penalty.

I actually think the ball in the bunker is quite playable. 4 inches behind the ball and thrash down hard into the sand. I've seen alot worse than that. Biggest problem with burrowing holes is getting agreement from playing partners that it is in fact a burrowing hole :(

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,473 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

So I was okay then, it's a WATER HAZARD where you do not get relief, cheers

Considering bunkers originated from sheep burrowing for shelter from the wind, you could argue that a bunker is in itself an animal hole, the nearest point of relief being the fairway....

Exactly. I was joking initially as it looked from the pic like a simple case of resting in it's own splash mark. In a situation like that you have to ask yourself "What would Tiger do?" :)

I got one very like that at Glen of the Downs recently and the green was the other side. Unfortunately it was someone's big fat foot print so I had to play it and took three to get out. In hindsight I should have gone back and replayed the previous shot in but the group behind was on the tee etc.....

My own fault for going in I suppose but people really should be more considerate about how they leave bunkers.

Have to agree here. On the 15th hole, Headfort New recently I landed in the greenside bunker. Took a look at the bunker and it had been raked beautifully...apart from the foot prints which were inches into the sand !! I couldnt understand it. If you are going to rake the bunker and not rake the huge imprints made by your feet...what the hell is the point!!
