Great Fantasy Football Players In The Past?

After being reminded that Steve Bruce once scored 13 Premier League goals in a season long before Fantasy Premier League was created, it got me thinking about players who were or would have been great in the game in the past.

Obviously from what I have said above Steve Bruce comes to mind in the early 90's. Playing in a side who were always there or thereabouts and a big scoring threat would have made him an excellent Premier League player.

Ronaldo's 31 goal Premier League season in 2007-2008 made him an absolute must have and an easy captaincy choice every single week.

    Any more?

Cantona around 96, the number of games united won 1-0 with Cantona scoring was frightening!

martin laursen was a beast. Shearer, henry, pires always made my teams back in the day.

Ah,that was the name. I was trying to think of the Villa defender who racked up big points hauls but couldn't remember.

    From 2008:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2008/01/08/laursen-flirts-with-spurs-and-toon/

There’s inevitably lots of transfer speculation flying around right now but this one is sure to give a few thousand fantasy managers the shivers. Villa’s Martin Laursen, one of the surprise success stories of the season so far, is apparently contemplating jeopardising his fantasy output for the rest of it by signing for Spurs or Newcastle [source].

“I don’t know if they have spoken to Aston Villa, I haven’t heard anything, but it’s two big clubs and it’s certainly something that would interest me,†remarked Laursen today.

If such a move did materialise he’d not only be moving from a side with a solid back four to a side with a decidedly shaky one, he’d also be turning his back on the set-piece delivery of Young and Barry that has helped him to five Premiership goals thus far.

Laursen is owned by a third of those currently playing the Fantasy Premier League game. They’ll be hoping that this kind of talk is just a cunning plan on Laursen’s part as he enters into negotiations over a new Villa contract.

Ronaldo got me 48 points in one game once. ( and many others who would have had him as captain). The week we hammered Newcastle. Insane.

Morten Gamst Pedersen helped me win many leagues back in 05/06 in my final year of college.

He scored none goals that year and had a hatful of assists.

He started the game at around 7 mil and was near 10 at the end of the season.

Stephen Ireland was a budget midfield genius one season a few years back too. Hard to believe it now.

Henry was basically what Ronaldo became and RVP is now.

oh right, i read this wrong at first, i thought you were talking about how good bruce would have been, that we were to name similar players who would have been great if FPL was around then, hence me saying Irwin and Cantona.

the obvious ones have already been mentioned, Henry and Ronaldo are the 2 legends of this game. with Lampard and Gerrard competing in the the 3rd/4th place play off.

an honourable mention to Zaki for that wonderful half season about 4 years ago, a bit like michu last year except he only lasted til about december.

I'm sure JT would have been a great one to have had during the previous Mou reign, scored 10 goals or something one season didn't he?

It was for both mate. Those that never had a chance to be in Fantasy Premier League due to it not existing and those that were great in the past when the game was around :)

Shearer would have been huge in '94 and '95 at Blackburn.

Matt LeTissier. The original fantasy football God.

Graeme Le Saux would have been decent. An attacking full back who would deliver clean sheets, assists and the odd goal.

Julian Dicks would have smashed his way to Fantasy Football legendary status.

I'd say Kevin Philips would have been a hero too, basically anybody who would have been relatively cheap and scored a lot of points.

Didn't Rooney rack up a similar score, maybe more, although in a double gameweek before? Clint Dempsey won a lot of private leagues for me a few years ago with a similar score in a double gameweek in the last week or two of the season, too.

What did Defoe score that time he got 5 goals in a match?

I had the Berb as captain the day he scored 5 against Blackburn

Benito Carbone has a sensational season for me for Wednesday back in the day.

Matt Elliot for Leicester. He used to go upfront when they losing, seemed to always score.

I called my team 'The Brian McBrides' for the rest of a season after he once played on with a head wound worthy of that Monty Python sketch. I seem to remember him racking up the points. I loved him anyway.

Edit: I can't find any evidence of this, maybe I was thinking of him scoring a goal with a dislocated knee-cap http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/f/fulham/6953367.stm

He got around 23 points, I had him as captain that day

You have to think Beckham would have been a must have. Corners and free kicks as well as goals and assists from normal play, I'd say his scores would have been massive.

A few Arsenal defenders from the George Graham era would have been good too.

Benny Carbone would have had a decent season or two.

He would have been a decent price and a good chance they would have slipped up and put him as a midfielder.

Edit: Carbone was already mentioned. I'll throw Juninho into the hat as a missclassified midfielder.

my best ever score for a captain 50

    Joleon Lescott, of course.

His 2 goals towards the end of the season before last made me finish 1 point above my friend. Bragging rights was insane.

Darren Bent in his first season at Charlton when they were promoted. He cost 7 mil and I had him from the first day of the season, when he scored two I might add, for the entire season.

Paul Warhurst moved from centre back to centre forward mid season for Sheffield Wednesday in the early 90s and went on a phenomenal scoring spree.

Then Blackburn paid 3 or 4 mil for him and he did feck all!

Chris Sutton moved from centre back to striker as well.

Pretty sure Les Ferdinand got 30+ goals and 20+ assists in 1996. That would have been phenomenal.

Those goals were against us  I remember it well, the rain was horrendous. Bent scored two and Murphy scored a brilliant free kick. Murphy was the best player on the field by a mile.
