Did it last year. Very well organised. Only thing was it was damn cold last year even with wetsuit. Try and be one of the last few off the boat when getting dropped off at start, I was around the first few off because of safety they were only letting 2 swimmers jump in at a time. So imagine I had some wait till all swimmers were off and it wasn't nice waiting. Keep head down and blast away. Oh which one are you doing? The 2k or the 750?

    Good luck with it.

Doing the 2km, decided I would go all out considering I managed a 5km last year in little to no shape. Should be in much better shape this time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,016 ✭✭✭mad m

If your not used to swimming in wetsuits then start doing it. When I swam it, it was very sunny, as usual try and pick a place in distance at back of finish. It got colder near the end because a lot of rivers flow into it near end. But it might be different this year with the way weather was.

Just regged for this, today is last day of early bird registration, goes up by five euro after that.
Prob should have read up a bit about it before regging, its 2 hours drive from where I am, never had to drive more than 15 minutes for an event before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 486 ✭✭LaGlisse

Whats the course layout like for the 2K. Is it just a straight run from the boat to shore? many buoys? Hows sighting etc?

Well straight as the crow flys....can't remember how many buoys but you will get a great sight of course on way on boat. Sighting for me on that day was a nightmare, goggles fogged up so much because of cold, sun was rising and the shimmer on water didn't help..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,003 ✭✭✭martin6651

Take the Cliften road(Moycullen to Oughterard)and when you get to Maam Cross(Peacock's pub/Hotel on right) turn right. Stay on that road to the end a T junction turn left and follow that road where you will end in Leenaun. Going via Salthill will put a lot of unnecessary miles on your journey.

unfortunatly I dont drive but I have discovered a bus that will take me out to the area and to my accomodation.

I've heard you can be hanging around in the water for up to 10 minutes while everyone jumps off the boat one by one and they get the race started ...

Registered a while back for this and really looking forward to it. Been training recently for it coming out of the tri season but never done 2km. I always do sprints.
Driving down on Friday after lunch and spending the night before the race. Really looking forward to it.
Where are people shacking up the night before?
    Good luck to all.

    Hi guys

Entered into the 750m swim on Oct 12th - its my first ever OW swim - looking forward to it

couple of questions though - wheres the best place to practise my OW (sea swimming only) swimming around Dublin area - getting my pool training done but need some sessions in sea.

also need to pick up some hand paddles and a pull bouy - best place to pick these up?

    cheers

Hey Mark, where are you located? I swim quite often in Seapoint down between Blackrock and Dun Laoghaire.
It is a great place as there is a ramp to head into the water from.
There are actual buoys out in the water that people use to swim to/ from.
For the training gear why not try here:

I couldnt tell you mate, I know people swim out there, but how safe it is, clean, and good for OW training, I honestly have no idea.
This is a link to the location I'm talking about if you were able to get out there. Even at the weekends might be an idea.

There is an old thread here about Dollymount, the only thing you need to keep and eye on with Seapoint is the tide, if you go when it is out there'll be nothing but sand for miles lol.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2957188
High tide this Saturday is 7 am or 7pm, you can also go an hour either side of these times and be able to swim too. Keep an eye here

How is everyones training coming along? I am registered in wave two (30-40mins) and training is going well. Clocked up 1.8km doing drills last night and only didnt hit 2km as time ran out. Feeling good though.

Doing alright. Only really back in the pool this week. Have 6k clocked up since Tuesday so hopefully be in good enough shape come the day. Average about 11mins for 750m open water swims as part of sprint tri's. Going for a 2k sea swim over the weekend to see what time I should expect (hopefully around 32-34mins) as I have no real idea over that distance. Really looking forward to it TBH

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 232 ✭✭Pm1e

Thats a good time chap, I'd be in or around the same for sprint distance, course depending, clocked in 9:30 in Athy this year so you must be good ;)

Going to nip down to Seapoint myself on Saturday (high tide midday) and see where I'm at also. Taken a half day from work on the Friday so really buzzing for it now.

Why not do the Bert O Brien swim down at Ringend Basin at 2pm this Saturday, two races on 750m & 1500m....Ildsa are running it, its for charity and 10euro entry.

    http://www.ildsa.info/index.php/events-2010/4-swim-events/139-bert-obrien-charity-fun-swim-1k

Dont mind that it says 1k....they have changed this.

Edit: It was on at 1pm but because of heavy rain the time has been moved to 2pm

Edit again..venue changed now swim is at Seapoint at 2pm

In past years there was only but a handful of people who done it as it was only a fun swim and the distance was only 500meters. There is a nice silver perpetual cup for the winner..

This has grown with numbers over the years, I wasn't at it last year but heard a good few turned up for it.

Everyone is invited from novices to advanced swimmers...

    See you there...

    Enjoy.

I sure did, an absolute cracker of a day, weather was fab, spirits were high. Came in 7th overall so feeling good for next week. I am fairly sure it wasn't 1.5km but a great day out non the less.

Yeah I'd say more close to 900m if even....you in skins or wetsuit..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 232 ✭✭Pm1e

Went with a wetsuit and regretted it the minute I put it on lol, far too hot for a wetsuit. one of the marshals said it was 1250, 250+500+500. Great fun and good to get out the week before the Fjord

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭biomed32

really looking forward to this now, training gone really well and have a wetsuit now that has been tried and tested.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 232 ✭✭Pm1e

yeah it should be great, have you been pool training or sea or both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭biomed32

Due to work and other commitments I have only managed the pool but was in it today in the wetsuit and it went fine

Have a look on the faces of the first few in, it will give you a gauge of what water temps are like.... Good luck with it lads..

Hi? I have never swam in the sea however I have taken part in several river swims.

What conditions can I expect to face in Killary? Will the swell be an issue? Will it be very choppy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 232 ✭✭Pm1e

Hey Kneejerk, I have absolutely no insight to the fjord swim. I guess it'd be something to ask a local or someone who has done it before. I know I'm just going to enjoy it no matter what. :D

From memory last year I don't recall much of a chop, the only thing that really hampered me was sighting as the sun was coming up and shimmering off the sea in front of you. Hopefully the weather will be nice for you on Saturday. Also I just remembered from last year they made a hash of the results at presentation. I'm sure they will have it sorted this time.

Heading to Galway tomorrow so packing the bag tonight, starting to feel very real haha!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 232 ✭✭Pm1e

Headed myself tomorrow too, will get packing in the morning as dont feel great. As anyone pegged down a time their aiming for yet? I see last years winners hit 26mins, would that have anything to do with currents as that is pretty fast. I'm aiming for anything in between 30-33mins

I believe the 2nd wave had a much better tow than 1st last year. Can't remember who won it last year but it was close between Kevin Thornton for 2nd.

A 50 hour work week has left me panicking about logistics picking buses to coincide with train arrivals. Bus Eireann service is useless so going with citylink which drop me at maam cross
