    I drive a fair bit for work, approx 6,000miles per year, and need a car with really good boot space. I'm trading in a 2002 SEAT Leon. Low running costs/tax/mileage are desirable, of course.

    I've seen online that the Peugeot 308 SW has great space and the 1.6l Diesel pretty good. Any opinions?

    I'd love a VW Passat or Skoda Octavia, but they are out of my price range. I could pay up to €10 or €11K at a push.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

    At only 6k a year that is very low miles id be looking at a petrol at such low mileage.

    I suppose I have underestimated the mileage. At what mileage does a diesel engine become economical?

    I switched my search to include petrol engines and there are many more choices.

    Re RS4, my budget wouldn't stretch that far.:mad:

    What's most important is boot space, running cost, dependability and comfort.

    6000 miles a year is tiny mileage, certainly not worthy of considering a diesel car. You need to be doing upwards of 15k miles per year to even start considering a diesel car imo. In fact I would say at that low mileage fuel type should not be at the forefront of your purchasing decision.

    That Octavia looks good but the mileage seems high for a 3 year old car. Anyhoo, it's beyond my budget.

    These get used a lot. It's 82k miles on a diesel, and it most likely came from a fleet of cars. These do about 200 miles a day!
    As long as it's been properly maintained, you can't go wrong.

    my friend got 08 passat (two years ago, so 3 years old that time) around 200.k on clocks. did proper service, and now these 3 years driving without any problems. german diesels are reliable cars, if serviced right.

    Rover 75 Diesel Tourer can be picked up very handy in the UK get the auto no DMF, clutch etc. Full spec available at handy money. Not many tourers here in Ireland of any model to be fair you'll really need to go to UK to get decent selection. 75's can be got mainly up to 05 reg although there are later reg models. BMW 2.0d engine very reliable no turbo issues and parts are easily sourced.     +1 on the rover 75 auto diesel, have one myself for the reasons stated by PN14, a year later all is still well with it.

    BTW, That ebay link is a V6 petrol.

    Sorry bout the link think I was looking at one and pasted in the one below it. Anyway you get the picture although if the OP is only doing 6k miles a year that V6 petrol may be worth it (that V6 I linked to though is a nice car). I wouldn't mind a nice easy going V6 if I was doing handy miles. Although any one buying ay V6 75 should make sure the timing belts are done 3 in total its supposed to be an expensive change.
    Have a ZT diesel manual saloon myself for over 2 years 60,000 miles clocked up relatively trouble free (had to do master cyclinder in clutch earlier in summer but with 100k miles on a manual diesel that is expected) no other issue except service parts. Really excellent car and pretty rare on Irish roads

    I'd recommend kia ceed SW 1.6crdi, all Irish ones got the 113bhp version of engine, very reliable car.
    Early pre facelift models don'y have Dpf and these have no DMF problems that I've heard off.

    Well, I've looked at a few cars in my price range today and one or two caught my eye.

    There was a 2009 1.6l diesel with over 100,000 on the clock which was lovely to drive and had great space inside. The dealer, who would give the car a warranty said, as others have here, that mileage on a diesel car is not such an issue as long as it is well maintained. Is this true? Would I be crazy to trade in a 2002 petrol car with 102,000 for a 2009 diesel with more miles on the clock?

    Also, most of the 2009, 2010 cars that I saw today in my budget are imports from UK. I have noted the UK reg of the one I like. Is that a problem, even if there is a service record and warranty?

    If so than you're talking 62,000 miles vs 102,000 that you currently have

    What kind of cars are you looking at?

    Also contrary to what is said on here it's not so much the mileage that you clock up that dictates justifying a diesel. It's has more to do with the environment in which you use the car in. E.g 6k a year on a motorway will have no ill effects on a modern diesel but 6k a year in stop start city driving more than likely will.

    More questions!

    If I was looking at a Kia Ceed or Skoda Octavia and there was a choice between, for example a 2008 version with 60,000 miles and a 2010 with 100,000 miles, are you better off going with the newer car or the car with the lowest mileage?

    I'm talking about diesels here by the way.

    Also, as I asked before, do imported cars pose a problem, even if there is a service history and warranty offered?
