Details of a District Court case from 1940

I'm trying to find details of a District Court case heard in 1940.

The case was of a chauffeur making off with his employer's car without permission. The person in question was sentenced to a month in prison.

I have the names of all the parties involved, including the judge.

Would any details be kept on a courts register regarding such petty cases?, or would I be better off to look at prisoner records?

    Thanks!

It would have been recorded in the District Court records, your best bet would be to call into the office in person and see if someone was prepared to look it up, it's probably in a big leather-bound book piled up wih other archives in a cupboard at the back of the office. Go on a quiet day, not when the court is sitting. You'll need to know the exact date of the court hearing.

Accessing the data via criminal records would be a bigger deal, records of that vintage would never have been digitised so they're probably locked away in Garda HQ and getting access to them would be difficult. If it was possible, you'd need to know the chauffer's date of birth.

The National Archives store the historical court records, accessible on appointment.

    As suggested above.

If the case was outside Dublin, it may have been written up in the local papers.

Many of these can be searched in local libraries
