I'm just wondering what people's opinions are on bonfires. I'm really getting Tired of the one I have to look at and smell every year in front of my house. It maddens me when i see the crap people put in the fire to burn, eg couches, children's plastic toys, furniture etc,.... The list goes on. I feel this is highly toxic and dangerous for our environment. Yet I'm made feel like an odd ball for staying in my house and not participating in the event :-/.

No, but I think they should be organised under parental supervision.

Meh, I'm not to bothered really. Great way to get rid of stuff you don't need or want. As long as everything is kept in order, and noting serious happens like someone throwing an animal into it, or something scummy, then I don't mind. It's only once a year really.

And before anyone says it, no I don't participate in making bonfires nor have I ever. Just my personal opinion.

Used to love the Halloween bonfires in Tallaght when I was a kid apart from the occasional feline barbeque.

I used to enjoy the feeling of anarchy that descended on the capital city on Helloween night

They can be a pain in the ass sometimes but i would say that the majority of people in most counties set the bonfires up with safety in mind for all.

But if it's the contents put into the bonfire of which you are worried about, then i'd say to you... go to mount etna and give out to the volcano of which is supposedly causing a lot of pollution as well.

bonfires are banned . its just nearly impossible to police it when every estate in Dublin all does it at the same time. ps I agree with the ban.. your at your wits end the nights leading up to oct 31 with all the messing and carry on

I don't understand what the attraction is but I have no problem with them. As long as people don't be jumping over them like in 'Dancing at Lughnasa'. Asking for trouble.

It just goes to show you "the might" of the "people" in regards to the government not being able to stop it.

Also, i can only imagine the fire-brigade/ambulance and gardai the day before bonfire night all pleading for it to rain hard on this day. I can't remember a washout on bonfire night yet.

The only law that can stop bonfire night is the law of nature, Rain.

We should add a bit of a spark to future bonfire nights.

    Something like this...

Im still looking out onto a beautiful green with a big pile of junk leftover from the bonfire! Who's going to clean it up, it's looking like I will have to do it, yet I didn't even particapate in the event. Rusted springs from couches, beds etc.... :-/ not a pretty sight.

Just make a phonecall to the county council and they will send a crew out to remove said springs, it's just a huge pothole after all, oh, i forgot, they don't seem to fix potholes much anymore, worth a shot though.

If I saw someone throwing a cat into a bonfire I'd probably wear my boot out, kicking them.

Well it would mean booking into a hotel for the night, the bonfire is usually still going when I wake to go to work :-/.

Don't worry so much about it, it is 1 day a year, we all put up with junk the odd time and continue on.

My personal opinion on this situation if it is annoying you a bit on the day, is to grab a nice bottle of Barolo Sant Orsola red wine, and enjoy the evening and night as to be oblivious to the "unimportant" racket and animal playing behaviour of the outside populous.

Garnet red colour with orange nuances. The perfume is typical, ethereal, pleasant, intense, with notes of violet and rose. The flavour is full, strong, severe but velvety and harmonic, with a light liquorice aftertaste.

After ingesting such an exquisite wine you will feel more relaxed and in harmony with this minor annoyance :).

Ok Zenno, but what would I do about the toxic fumes coming in through the vents in my house 8-@. There's no escaping it.

Ours have started already - will have to put up with them across from my house from now til near Christmas. Huge one at Halloween, adults go out & put tyres & other toxic crap on it, throw on some petrol & then leave kids to it, and I'm talking little toddlers being left unsupervised. Often see them playing in the ashes, which can't be good for them.
My parents both suffer with breathing problems, and the fires are generally set next to the wall of an elderly woman's house & it upsets her. I wouldn't mind if they only burned wooden pallets & the like. But yeah, it's horrible to have to put up with nearly half the year.

    It's tradition it would seem.

And sure, for example, the dublin fire brigade cant put out every bonfire in the county on Halloween night and people are still going to light them no matter what. It's just one of those things.

Not arguing with points made against them. Safety being the first. I mean imagine if some poor kid gets seriously burned :( But it would seem they are in to stay and what can you do. Kinda falls down to parents to tell their kids about the danger of fire. As my parents did and I went to bonfires as a kid (Note, under the supervision of my older brothers :p )

Hope that nature answers your call for heavy rain is the only thing i'm afraid :) then there will be no bonfires, but it would have to rain long enough for 2/3 days so all the teenagers and kids get bored with thinking about it.
