Buying an untaxed car

    Howdy all.

I'll be going to look at a car some time next week and hopefully buy it.
The car's tax is out by a few months.
I cannot tax the car without being the registered owner, and as I'm sure you are all aware it sometimes takes quite a while for a change of ownership to be registered, especially if the seller takes their time posting off the form.

So therefore I can't tax the car for a while after I buy it. Meaning, legally speaking, I can't drive it home.

Am I expected to leave the car sitting in the seller's yard for a week or more, or is there some way for me to tax it immediately after buying it?
Seller doesn't have time to tax it apparently. I know it will only take him a few minutes but no point trying to force him.

Your tax liability starts the day you buy the car [or the start of that month]. Anything before that is for the seller to look after. Tax it and drive it on day of purchase. Don't forget insurance :)

Get seller to make photocopy of the log book and give you the photocopy.
The gardai know that you won't be able to tax it having just bought it that day, so when you get the new log book go to the tax office.
I was let through a check point 4 weeks after buying my car. You'll be fine once insurance and nct are in date.
They can tell from your disc anyway when it was transferred over.
I'd buy on the 1st if September if I were you.

I bought a car last week I've been driving it all of the time since then and I haven't got the log book back yet. Just because the vehicle transaction has not been completed yet doesn't mean I'm going to stop driving the car. The guards are not stupid they know these things can take a week or two so they are not strict on it not down my way anyway.
