Aviation in China

Recently, I have read a couple of articles highlighting the growth of the industry in China.

    Article here.
China's civil aviation system is the second largest global aviation system after the US while the total transportation throughput and the passenger throughput of China's civil aviation is ranked fifth.

The aviation growth seen in China is the highest growth in the world in this sector. In the global market, China is the second largest national air travel market and also the fastest growing.

To meet the demand of the market, China buys more than 100 new passenger jets every year and this forms more than a tenth of the world's total demand. While this indicates a huge domestic market, the country is keen to develop and promote its local manufacturers of aircrafts.

So what does this mean for the wider industry? Could China eventually compete with Boeing / Airbus?

Another aspect is safety. This article looks at some of the safety issues caused by chronic delays. Is this an accident waiting to happen?

Finally, will China be a potential destination for newly qualified Irish or European pilots or would language be a barrier?

    Thoughts? :)

In the future I would guess that Chinese manufactureres will compete with A and B. However as we can see with the COMAC C919 getting there will be a long slog. Perhaps in 15-20 years a Chinese aircraft could compete with the B737/A320/B777/A350.

In terms of safety I think any rapid expansion will lead to failures in regulation and/or operations. Just look at the dismal safety record of Lion Air in Indonesia as an example., or perhaps the cultural problems which have plagued the Korean aviation industry.

My personal opinion would be that the Chinese may use their own language for domestic flights. It remains to be seen how open any Chinese aviation industry becomes. In terms of market numbers it does have the potential to be massive.

Why are they so far behind the rest of Asia / EU / US in terms of delays?

One of the articles mentioned that in the US, there are more flights and less physical airspace, but they don't suffer delays on anywhere near the same scale? What are they doing wrong in China?

Seriously how can you have that many delays. Clearly they need someone from heathrow stuck in there or Atlanta. How, 80 new airports and 100 extended bloody hell are they just circling aircraft. It's either they need more training or better airport designs. I'm presuming of they going building 80 airports they must be quite small maybe a bigger one is needed.

Also a bad pun but made in china ha. Seriously they must be making their own rules that aren't working well. I must learn more about Asian airspace seems like it could be quite interesting to learn about how things work in their airports .

Remember the military play a huge role in routing and controlling aviation in China including ATC, flight planning and aerodrome control. As they transition to a more openly controlled CAA type organisation i'm sure things will improve.
