Dressing as April O Neil from TNMT for a fancy dress party this weekend, trying to figure how to do my hair as my hair is quite a lot longer than hers?

My hair is longish, layered, thick and naturally wavy. I also have no idea how to style my hair beyond straightening it or plaiting it :P
How can I get my hair big and full of volume, possibly with a bit of curl in it to make it look shorter? Or any other suggestions would be welcome!

You could curl it and pin the ends up to make it look shorter. Check out faux bob tutorials on youtube.

Just looked at a tutorial there, that's well beyond my skills, I don't even own a curler :o

Backcomb the underneath bits of your hair to increase the body of it.
To make it shorter, use bobby pins to tuck it under. Maybe ask a friend who's good with hair to do it, if you're not very good yourself.
