You cant use a rope or pole now.

Once the vehicle is not propelled under it's own power its deemed a trailer.
You cannot use a rope/bar to row a vehicle anymore.
You have to use a dolly, trailer or recovery truck.

Towing is not illegal, but the vehicle being towed must be insured.

Didn't know that recovery with a rope was illegal

I've seen some very dodgy dollies for sale on DD and I won't trust towing them behind me empty never mind with car on them.

    What about A frames ?

I'll stick with using my 5ton strap and 2 rated steel shackles if you don't mind.. Those towing bars don't look up to much tbh

Can somebody please show me where it states that towing with a rope or pole in now illegal? To my knowledge this is just hearsay.

Once a rope or pole is 'fit for purpose' it can be used to tow a car (the car being towed must be insured/taxed/nct'd to be on a public road). The use of a rope or pole is only for moving a broken down car to a 'place of safety' - NOT for moving an uninsured/untaxed/non-nct'd car around the country.

Towing Dollies and A-Frames are a different matter, both legally and insurance-wise.

Towing Dollies open up a grey area legally-speaking, e.g.
    - the towing vehicle must be of a certain weight relative to the dolly (i.e. much heavier)
    - the dolly must have brakes fitted if the gvw of the dolly and vehicle-on-tow exceeds 750kg
    - then as regards insurance, what private policies cover the use of a tow dolly? (A motor trade policy is most likely what is required).

    A-Frames -

I have used A-Frames many years ago while working in the motor trade. These frames are very handy (stored in car boot when not in use) but -
    - it is very easy to jack-knife the combination while using one
    - a braking system must be used - on the towed-vehicle - if over 750kg
    - insurance...again a very grey area (unless you are covered on a motor trade policy).

The most straightforward way to move a vehicle (legally, and properly insured) is by car transporter trailer or recovery truck.

    Citation needed.

The amount of 'pub talk' that passes for knowledge of motoring law in this country never ceases to amaze me. I'm not saying you're wrong, but your claim needs evidence.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
