    Hi All

Would really appreciate some advice on where to begin planning a ski holiday. Living in south eastern Netherlands and want to go somewhere not more than four hours drive away over Christmas.

    Suitable municipalities would be:
    • North Rhine-Westphalia
    • Lower Saxony
    • Hesse
    • Rhineland Palatinate
    • Saarland
    • Baden-Württemberg at a push

Can't really go any further than those places as over the winter roads can be dodgy, but the information isn't easy to find unless you're going all the way to Bavaria. Just don't know where to begin. Is there a ski resorts for dummies guide? How can you be guaranteed enough snow? What equipment/ clothing do I need to buy and what is cheap enough to rent?

Total novices so any advice welcome :)

Without checking my map, I've a funny feeling that the places you mention are all flat so you're not going to go too far on skis.

Honestly, from my understanding, Bavaria is where it all starts so Bavaria is where you are going to need to be. Or further south into Austria.

If driving is going to be an issue (understandable) then consider getting the train instead.

Definitely not all flat (however I do stress beginner so the smaller the slopes the better!) ie Winterberg in NoordR and Feldberg in BadenW, I'm more concerned about there being snow from the 20th December to the 4th of January. We'd have to drive really as it will be Christmas and we're packing the dog aswell :).

It's our preference to do self catering so that we can do Christmas dinner, were just going to rent a house for between 5 and 10 people, but alternative suggestions are welcome.

What about the Harz mountains? I haven't been myself and only mention it because my brother went there in mid-February and there was snow, he wasn't skiing though!

But according to this, you may be in luck!

Would the Jura range not be a little closer?

Is the Black Forrest beyond your scope - even they are low altitude and weather dependent
The Allgäu Alps is I think the closest you get Obersdorf, Oberjoch etc. (west bavaria) is quite good skiing but smaler
To be honest I reckon the Train is a good option and try Bavaria or Austria and worthwhile
Many dutch people drive to ski in Austria and France it is not unusual
