Internet Addiction

So, that last thread that was closed got me thinking.

Is internet addiction as problematic as other forms of addiction? How do people view this behaviour?

Lets face it, everyone has access to a computer these days. Is it more socially acceptable for someone to be hunched over a computer all night, as opposed to other process orientated addictions?

Given the fact that everyone reading this post is on line, many of us more so than others. Where does the line cross from social use of the internet, to problematic addiction, (maybe I've answered my question). Has anyone got access to relevant research evidence?

One other point, many people will use porn via the net, what differences are there (if any), between some addicted to porn and someone addicted to the internet, but not for the purpose of watching porn.

    Cheers

I don't see how this can be assessed other than from the point of view of the individual concerned. If a person feels they are unable to control their internet use and seek help because of this then surely that could be classed as 'problematic'. I don't really see any objective standards for determining this at all.
