Seen a trailer earlier for a 10 part behind the scenes look at Dubai Airport, on National Geographic Channel.

    Starts on September 18th.

    Should be worth a look.

But is it true that they built the runways too close to each other and can not use them as they would in Heathrow without a special type of ILS which is yet to be installed? This results in the long holding patterns.

That and it was a terrible airport to get through when busy for me.

Was an interesting start to the series, some good behind the scenes looks at the T3 concourse being finished and some of EK's ops. Unfortunately it also suffers from similar production to many of the airline shows were passengers arriving late to the gate/baggage system breaking down etc. are made into tense moments that could end in disaster! It's stuff that happens daily at every airport around the world, not unique to Dubai. I know it's aimed at non-avgeeks but it's very annoying.

+1 There seems to be a standard template for every such program on Discovery & Nat Geo, doesn't matter if it's a tug boat pushing a tanker into an oil terminal or the working of a complex factory. The program makers get access on the basis that the people they portray are shown in a positive light.

Ultimately, the program makers surrender editorial control to the people whose work is shown in the program so there is a standard formula to what they produce which goes along the following lines.....

    1. Look at how complex this operation is, clearly the people running the place are highly trained and motivated.

    2. A few supervisors and managers get their moment in the sun by talking to camera with their full names and titles captioned.

    3. Oops, here comes a crisis, this could get nasty.

    4. Well-trained workers fix the problem, all is well and aren't they're doing a great job?
