Pub crawl?

    Hello,

Me and a couple of friends are thinking about going on a pub crawl just before college starts. We went on one last Thursday for a friends birthday which was a bit of a fail because we only arrived in around 9:30 and a lot of the pubs close around 12-ish also most of the pubs in temple bar were over 21's so we spent a lot of time searching for a pub than spending time inside one. So I need suggestions of pubs that allow under 21's and we're trying to keep it southside just for convenience. So if anyone has any suggestions post below =).

    Thanks

Messr Maguires (or whatever it's called now) - Long Stone - MacTurkles - into Trinity College for one in the Pav - O'Donoghues - 4 Dame Lane - after that, you're in pub central, so...

Start in the Bull and Castle, the Porterhouse Temple Bar, Farringtons in Temple Bar, Sweeney's on Westmoreland Street, then Sweetman's (the old Messr Maguires).

Good cheap pints in most of them.

I wouldn't even make it out the door of the Bull and Castle and even if I did, I certainly wouldn't make it out the door of the Porterhouse! :D

Has it got to be city centre?

What about dalkey? might be more of a change too. Dart drops you right there, loads of eateries about too.

Bull and Castle has decent beer, bit pricey though

He'd convinced me with the name too, although I was thinking of the same place.

Will all these accept us at 18? As we're planning on going this Saturday.

Only bar in that list I could possibly see you getting any grief in would be the Porterhouse... but even that's unlikely

We were there Thursday 2 weeks ago but at the central one and we got in fine. They didn't even ID us. Hopefully it will be the same tomorrow =P & we might stick the the central one too if its more likely we will get in.

It was the only one I ever got any grief off in Uni. But these days, I guess they don't turn any business away, even the bumfluffed variety :D

Speaking from experience (I work a door in Templebar) I'll give you the same advice I gave my son and daughter when they started going out..

If you're 18 and get into a bar anywhere, stay in it.

I wouldn't take the chance of splitting your group up by some getting in (to another bar/club) and others not.

A lot of bars just won't take the chance on 18 year olds.

I never saw the appeal in a pub crawl, just seems like a lot of hassle just to get drunk.

I go on mini pub crawls all the time with one or two people.

We get a drink in, see who's about and then head on to the next place. Makes the night more lively and it doesn't have to be 10 pubs. Even visiting four might liven up an otherwise dull evening.

    They're lovely in autumn weather.

On a Tuesday and Wednesday (football season), used to do Hop House after work, to the Woolshed for the Champions League, after that to 2 more pubs and then home...

Not with the same variety of beers. Some would prefer not to drink the usual five or so that are available everywhere so it's worth going to different places.

But why wouldn't go to a bar with a large variety like Against the Grain or Mulligans. They will even let you try the beers for free. And are comfy and serve food for soakage.

Because ATG don't have the same beers as the Porterhouse. The Porterhouse doesn't have the same beers as WJ Kavanaghs... etc.

I think that's ridiculous, find it hard to believe that someone would do a pub crawl from with pubs that far apart, you are having me on.

ATG and the Porterhouse in Temple Bar are 1.1km apart, which, according to Google Maps takes 14 minutes to walk. It's 950m to the one on Nassau St, which would take 11 minutes. Anyone with full mobility would do it in less, as is always the case with Google's time estimates. You'd probably end up walking half that from the bus to the first pub anyway. I'm not sure how one could be so incredulous at the proposition.

If you ran out of beers to try in either of those pubs you wouldn't make it to the other.

Exactly. How much are you going to drink that you would need another pub? If you went to say Against The Grain, you probably have 80 beers to try!

Depends on what appeals to you, as well as what you've already tried. Most of the beers available in these places aren't kegged or on cask, which makes a difference to price, as bottles are usually priced arbitrarily higher than pints, and other factors like taste and mouthfeel. A lot of people prefer one format to the other so it really isn't a case of choosing from a list of 80 beers even in specialist places. If you want variety that matches your taste then changing place frequently as one would on a pub crawl really does make sense. If you'd prefer to drink five pints of Coors then it may not.

If you were to do a pub crawl in the city centre you'd have to cover a decent distance between pubs to avoid the seeing the same Heineken/Carlsberg/Coors triumvirate in every pub.

If you wanted decent beers all the way you'd have to do something like ATG -> Bull and Castle -> Porterhouse -> Black Sheep. That's a hell of a walk.

I like a variety of beers and like all of the above pubs (especially B&C) but for a pub crawl it's easier just to stick to short distances and settle for Heineken in most of the pubs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭Lux23

People don't go on a pub crawl to experience different beers, the vast majority are more concerned about getting pissed and having a silly story to tell on Monday in work.

I know there are craft beer crawls, but they are really more of a 5k walk than a crawl.

    I prefer not to settle.

Anseo, ATG, Porterhouse and Cassidy´s or Gingerman would be a good route with tasty beers. Gingerman kind of leads to a dead end but with Cassidy´s you could swing over JW Sweetman to finish. 1.4km or 17 minutes of walking, with a couple extra to account for going to the Porterhouse.

Would be a great pub crawl with quality brews.

The appeal of the pub crawl is surely changing places and the OP seemed to want to get a taste of Dublin pubs so I´d disagree with Lux23 there.

Not for the average 18 year old, in my experience the craft beer enthusiast is normally older than that and like you said not interested in settling. They want a premium product in a nice setting with a good price, whereas the majority of pub crawls I've witnessed or been on were all about getting sloshed.

The whole exercise is futile for me though, I like a few drinks in a nice, comfy bar and I don't want to be toddling all over the city in my heels.

what about a North quays/ riverside tour?

start up on parkgate street and make your way along the river to Oconnell bridge. Hit every pub on the way :D

So I think the route would be Eamon Reas, Nancy Hands, Ryans, Millenium, Iveagh bar, Bigs bar/venue, Voodoo Lounge, Morrison bar, Car & Oconnell, Arlington and then finish at the batchelor inn.

if youre still standing, finish up at a gig in the pint just past the bridge.

some good places there! just a pity sin e and fibbers rock bar aren't open anymore. I may have even missed the odd pub out, not sure if the quill is still open or if the chancery inn is technically on the quays! :)

It's not really manky, slight smell of piss alright.

I love a good casual pub crawl, that's completely unplanned.

I can appreciate the staying in a single comfortable pub, but I prefer the moving around, picking up the different atmospheres of the pubs and the city itself along the way.

Been there about a dozen times; wasn't that far from where I used to live.

It's not bad, and you're right about the smell of piss, but you'd want to give your friends a few caveats before you walk them through the door ("right lads, it's a decent pub, but ...") :D

Can't remember if they had a decent pint or not, though.

That's you though...can you not understand that other people do enjoy pub crawls? It's not about different beers. Different bars have different atmospheres. Some people might think that sitting in the one pub for the whole night is the most boring thing in the world.

I'm just saying I don't get it myself, not saying anyone else has to agree with me.
