    Hi,

I'm doing the 85k rebel tour in a couple of weeks and was considering cycling from cork to glengarriff the day before. something like 80k or so. anyone have any experience of the foolhardiness or otherwise of this idea?

    roads to avoid?

    thanks!

    Great idea.

I'd take the Dripsey Coachford road to Macroom. From Macroom follow Lee to it's source in Gougane Barra, via Inchigeelagh.
You have to climb up over a pass then, name escapes me, and drop down onto Bantry Glengarriff road.
Did it about 4 years ago in reverse. Lovely cycle.
Avoid Macroom/Cork road. Going via Dripsey on other side of river is nice

No map with mapmyride and ridewithgps and split the difference!

Your going upstream against a dammed river to Gougane Barra. Very very gentle ascending.

The pass after that is much easier than Healy or Caha the day after.

    You won't regret doing it.

You could also go via Crookstown Beal Na Blath Copeen Kealkill, Bally Lickey and Glengarriff.

I did that last year before the Rebel Tour. It was 96km via Dripsey, Macroom and Ballingeary. nice route. Elevation gain 892m if the garmin can be trusted. wind was against me on the way and on the way back it lashed heavy for most of it! was good buzz

I'd avoid this tbh, a lot of west cork use it as their main road to Cork city, normally very busy narrow road with cars and lorries with nothing to see. Good surface (apart from Coppen, mother of god...) but wouldn't be enjoyable imo.
