Applying for the same job through different agencies

I am currently job hunting and have discovered that a job I'm interested in has been advertised via two separate agencies and websites - well, the second one has slightly more information than the first, but comparing them side to side, they do seem for the same job. There is a chance that they are for different jobs, of course, but just sound similar.

What is the done thing for issues like this? Both agencies have replied to me in the past for separate jobs, with one calling me in for an interview previously, though it was unsuccessful as I didn't have the required level of experience for that role.

Would it be OK to apply for the same job via those two agencies or just stick to the one?

Stick to one or risk losing the job completely (some companies has as policy to throw out any candidate coming from two or more agencies because it wreck all kind of havoc of which agency should be paid etc.).

    + 1

Engage with one of the agencies and see how you go.

Once you know who the role is with it would do no harm to check with the other agency to make sure its not a different role, ie phone up say "you have a role for a "whatever professional" based in "wherever" Is that role with "X Ltd"? if so I am already talking to them, but if its another company I'd be interested in talking further. No need to say how or why.

I wish I had known that it was advertised through two different agencies on two separate websites, otherwise I would have applied with the other. *sigh* oh well.
