Can anyone recommend a good post-emergence spray? What do you use and do you find it good value?

    Grass!!! :o

    clover safe?

    clover safe:
I used Clovex this year and has done the job.
Used DBplus undersown in the past too with good results.
    both good good enough

    check this http://www.teagasc.ie/publications/2012/1586/Post_Emergence_Management_of_Grass.pdf

There is a good few it depends on if you want clover or not. If you have clover in the mix look for DB undersown, clovex or such names. If clover is not in the mix MCPA is the best. I think you can use MCPA on red clover it will check same and not kill.

No clover and I have a drum of MCPA in the shed so that should do! Thanks :)

Remember to read the label before spraying there is different rates for using it as a post emergence.

Just read 2 data sheets for MCPA and both recommended not to spray on grass less than 1 year old.

Ye I used it 2 weeks ago on a very old let and has knocked the hell out if it. I wouldn't recommend it for a reseed

legumux or DB Plus or Undersown,

recommended to me by a wise man

I can see why you'd go with MCPA though, just got post emergence spray and its €233 for 10ac

So avoided MCPA as the post-emergence spray and got Legumex instead. Guess what, it turns out Legumex contains 240g/L 2,4-DB and 40g/L MCPA!

Will have to check what the concentration of straight MCPA is....

Rate of MCPA in clover safe sprays is very low straight MCPA is 50% I think. There are many generic forms of legumex that are cheaper than it.

And now I'm pi**ed off as I told the merchant I didn't need a clover safe spray and this is what is on the suppliers website about Legumex:
    Weed stage
Legumex DB is a deliberately weak formulation as the product strikes a balance between clover safety and weed kill. Therefore weeds should be sprayed at the seedling stage when very small.

    Key target weeds
All soft weeds of new ley if sprayed at seedling stage. If chickweed is a problem consider Alistell as the product of choice, or add small amount of CMPP to Legumex DB.

I'd have gone for Alistell if I'd know that!

Oh well, fail to prepare and prepare to fail...

What is the best clover safe spray to use?
We used master crop undersown here last yr in itailian and did a great job. No weeds in it at akm one yr later

You're spot on FP, I checked Agritox and the concentration in that is 400g/L. I don't know if it makes a difference but it appears as a dimethylamine salt in Agritox and as a potassium salt in Legumex.

Have to go and check what's in Alistell now, sometimes I wish I didn't read as much!!!

Alistell is the same as Legumex with the addition of 30g/l LINURON.
ALISTELL is especially useful where chickweed is a problem in newly sown ley.

What was it's history before reseeding? Maybe that is helping...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,326 ✭✭✭Farmer Pudsey

If I was reseeding I try to spray a year or two before with a spray that would clean up the sward and maybe again the year before reseeding. clover safe sprays are so weak they need to be used only on seedling weeds.

Yeah I was thinking of taking that approach in future especially because I'm dealing with really old leys. Also considering spraying last year's reseed next Spring as there is enough weed coming through to justify it (it got post-emergence 6 weeks post-seed last year).

Nope. Much harder yoke to kill with a spraym used to be sowed yrs ago as a crop for hens I believe. We had a field of it in a reseed last yr. Topped it to get rif of it.
    Only grows the once

Legumex. Too early to report if it has worked in real life yet but I'll update as it goes.

Once the grass is at 3 leaf stage, drive on.

It is not about how long since planting it is grass stage development. Remember the earlier you can hit the weeds the better the kill with post emergence sprays as they are as weak as sh!te

Agree with that. I waited 6 weeks but should have gone sooner as the grass was flying out of the ground. Also meant that by the time i was grazing it, it was stronger than I'd have liked

Has anyone a picture of grass at 3 leaf stage when it is ready for spraying?

They'll all have something similar just with a different name (much the same formulation but from a different company). I don't think there is much difference between any of them, the most important thing is timing.

I have a reseed that was done late last year and is riddled with chick weed. I don't care about the clover as I can put that back on later would MCPA be a good one to go with?

Also have another reseed that was done last spring what has allot of patches of babby docks emerging could I hit this with MCPA also ? Thanks

Similar story here, would April be the best time to hit these?
Could you use it om old meadows with dock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭49801

Can't help thinking since chickweed is such a soft weed you could get very good control with a clover safe spray. Grazing alone normally controls it good enough.

If it was docks on the other hand the use of clover a safe spray is questionable.
