    Good morning,

for the correct tariff classification I suggest to contact the Tariff Classification unit of Customs in Nenagh.

    tel : 067-63240
    tarclass@revenue.ie

    I would also recommend to have a look at the Food Safety Authority website ;
    http://www.fsai.ie/faq/food_supplements.html

If you are looking at shipping product from China by sea (or air) I would strongly recommend to agree F.O.B. (Free On Board) Chinese Port with your supplier and to source rates / services through an Irish based freight forwarder. If you search for the term : China Import Service Fee on Boards.ie you will get a flavour as to the reasons for suggesting that.

Feel free to post again or PM me if you require any further assistance

    Cheers,

    Hi Rudolf,

I looked in to links you send me about importing food supplements. From what I gathered it would be 17,5% duty tax plus 23% vat. I contacted an Irish fright carrier for quote. There is additional fees such as agency, terminal handling ,import processing ,plus insurance. Now my question is do I get charged duty and vat after sum all those fees ?

    Thanks for your help

    Hello Mr. Ocean,

I am attaching a Duty / VAT Calculator to this e-mail. If you fill in the cost of the product (have assumed you will be invoiced in US$) and the Freight Cost (only the seafreight from China to Dublin - again expect that to be expressed in Us$) and put in the rate of duty, it will show you your VAT and Duty outlay based on the rate of exchange between Us$ and Euro as applied by Customs in September.

The rate of duty @ 17.5% seems very high. Did you get the tariff classification from the tariff classification unit in Nenagh ? What is the customs tariff number they advised you ?

By the way, if you are looking for a second opinion on the freight costs from China, let me know the details of the shipment.

    Glad to be of help

    Cheers,

    Thanks Rudolf,

That was very helpful. I phone to Nenagh classification unit first time and I was told that duty rate would be 17,5% and 23% VAT from information I gave. That seamed a bit high for me as well ,so I phone them second time and was given number by witch I found that duty would be 12,5 % ,but by simply looking up on Dutycalculator.com I was given 9% duty rate and reduced VAT 13,5 % for product. So its a bit confusing. I have to clear that out before importing anything

    Hello Mr. Ocean,

can you advise what customs tariff number you were given by the tariff classification unit in Nenagh ? I am not suggesting that the duty calculator.com website is not reliable, but with the customs tariff number I can double check it for you.

I would also suggest to contact the VAT office to double check the correct VAT rate. I am not sure if food supplements qualify for the lower VAT rate. I will do some research aswell and see what I can find out.

    Cheers,
