Being asked for medical & references....but no job offer?

Currently applying for roles and not sure what to make of my current situation with one company.....hopefully someone here might help me out.

I've been through 2 rounds of interviews with one particular company. Have received really positive feedback from each stage of the process so far. Last stage was with quite a senior manager and again feedback all very positive.

I've now been told there are no more interview stages and have been asked to provide 2 references and to attend a medical However, I've been told that this is not a job offer. They were still interviewing other candidates last week, however I was asked for these the very next day after the interview.

I've never been in this position before....usually it's been a conditional offer which is then "official" after a successful medical. Surely they wouldn't ask all candidates for a medical??

    Any thoughts out there?

If they are asking you to submit references and do a medical I would take that as very positive.

I had to submit references before I got offered my last job but never had to do a medical. Obviously once your references check out ok and you pass the medical all should be ok.

Strange normally it is a job offer pending reference and medical check. It sounds like you are their first choice but they think they might still find better.

Thanks Ray, I'm thinking the same as yourself to be honest. Pretty annoying position to be in right now, taking ages to get back to me and I'm still kind of in limbo with no clear yes/no answer either way. I guess that's the way with all job application these days, everything seems to be so slow, especially from the applicant's pov!

    This is not very unusual.

The company is just making sure that you do not take the request for Medical and References as a formal offer. We once had a candidate that quit his job after being made an offer pending references. He failed the reference check and was out of a job :-( We felt like **** but could not hire him as his references were very poor.

Now we make a similar statement when requesting medical / reference checks.

That is kind of the point of companies saying we are offering you the job if you pass the medical and reference check. If anybody quit their job on that basis it is completely their own fault.

They aren't offering him the job but want to do the checks. That is unusual.

All I would say to anybody looking is never stop looking until you have signed a contract. The worst thing that happens is you get more than one job offer.

How many companies actually give out references these days?

My last two jobs in Financial Services only supply a statement of employment....eg "X worked here from date to date as an Y"
