Golf and the Gym

    Howdy

So, just wondering what are folks take on whether or not the gym can make a noticeable difference to your game?

Here's my scenario, I've got a good routine going in regards to practice/playing. I play 18 every weekend and i practice for at least 2 hours one evening a week (winter or summer) and in the summer i generally get 6 - 9 holes in one evening. I supplement all this by regular-ish lessons to make sure everything is on track.

Now with the autumn/winter season looming i'm thinking i might swap out my 6 - 9 holes with a visit to the gym, while continuing my normal practice/playing routine.

Other than the obvious health benefits, can it really help an amateur player?

    And before anyone asks.... :D

Start practicing Pilates and you will never look back. Golf Pilates is also offered.

I think if you are doing the right type of exercises it will certainly help but you would need to talk with a golf specific personal coach to do this, flexibility is key to golf so if you can work on that and your general fitness.....

    What am I, a Doctor?

Mark Crossfield on YouTube has started with exercises for golfers. He has a fitness instructor give a demo and explains exactly how the exercises help.

Most info I've seen always tends to lean towards core strength & flexibility, so as mentioned Pilates would be worth a look.

Can't see building bulk muscle being of any benefit, but cardio would be worth doing to improve stamina and keep energy levels up towards the end of a round

Thanks for including us high handicappers in there with you ;)

I think Dennehy's fitness in Cork?(Ballincollig) are working with Peter O Keefe and then there are also golf specific Yoga classes happening in Fota with https://twitter.com/BendyKenndy
