Fencing along regional road

We have to replace some fencing, which is old and knackered, along a regional road. Previously the fence had to keep in sheep, so sheep wire was used.

We'll only be putting cattle on the land, so it would make more sense financially to use only a few (2/3) lines of barbed wire on the new stakes. However, I have been told I should check this out, as sheep wire may be required along a regional road whatever beasts you're putting in. Also that barbed wire may not be acceptable along such a road.

Does anyone know what the score is on that?

I know there's some legislation in pipeline that will alter the law on wandering livestock. I think its due to be passed in the Autumn but I gave a quick google there and couldn't find it.

Unless this has a dramatic effect I don't think their is a requirement to have a certain standard of fencing. Just that the fencing is stock-proof.
I know that if you live in an area that isn't traditionally fenced then its not required by law. Areas in the West spring to mind.

The real bother comes if an animal gets out and onto the road and causes injury. Hard to argue it was stock-proof then.
But as for specific legislation specifying exact standard of fencing, I can't think of any.

imo all boundary fencing should get 4 strands of barbed wire. for peace of mind alone.

"Think" you are not supposed to use barbed wire or electrified plain wire beside a public road.

It was something to do with safety as far as I remember.Think the idea is thats its ok if its behind a ditch etc but not as a standalone fence.

Know that when working with a contractor years ago he always refused to put barbed wire alongside a road (just a strand or 2 of plain over the sheepwire). This was where the wire fence was the only thing between the field and the road.

That's gas because the NRA have a wire rope between the lanes on some motorways. Known among bikers as a 'biker slicer':mad:

Horrible stuff, always driving in a car but I can imagine the damage it'd do to a person at speed.

Best option all round IMO would be sheepwire and a strand or 2 of barb or bull wire
