No different from loosing it in Ireland really is it? The Irish embassy is hardly going to have them deported from the US?

What's it like I wonder as an illegal in the States....

Lots of switching phone numbers and addresses etc. How would you even open a bank account? Help from 'Fat Tony'?

Always wondered how people survive over there as an illegal.

I know a lad went over once on a two month tourist visa (or something) - the police there found him drunk in the back of a car about four years later, deported via immigration jail

With bank of america you don't need a social security number to open a bank account.

You can even get a driver's licence without one by supplying a SSN denial letter when applying.

Once you have a driver's licence and bank account, what more do you need?

Interesting all the same. I always picture illegal immigrants living somewhat of a 'Bourne' existence! :D

You're already illegal so will be deported back to Ireland when they find you.
    No passport needed then.

I would be careful in the next few hours, immigration might be knocking at your door! Not smart to post something like that here ... the mods know your location through their iP finding tools ;). And it's obvious they'll give you away :D.

Tear up your clothes, pull out a couple of teeth and dirty your hair up. Then go to the nearest local news station and communicate through howls and sharp barks. They will think you were raised by wolves and investiture you as a US citizen.

The NSA is hardly looking at web traffic from the US to a country which has a long history of terrorism.

Going to the Embassy they'll probably just give me my friend an emergency passport though, right?

Getting family to do it back in Ireland - don't you need the Gardai to stamp the photos and present them yourself?

This seems like the best answer no?

The only time he'll need the passport is when leaving. Once they find he's illegal they might even pay for his flight.

Why would it be just an emergency passport? (unless you need it pronto cause you're travelling)

You could be living there legally and still need a new passport?
Surely you can't only get an Irish passport in Molesworth street?
    Be highly impractical

If he says he's on holiday, they'll give him an emergency/temp one. If he says he's resident they will probably check his status and probably refuse him when they find out he's illegal. I can't imagine the embassy would be able to officially condone illegal immigrants.

Would they ask though? Or check?

I've been living in Ireland for well over 10 years now (legally) and have never been asked diddly about my status when getting a new passport.

Having said that it'd be impossible for me to be here illegally but even so.

I think maybe your friend ;) should give the embassy a ring and ask them?

How can the Irish embassy check his immigration status?

A passport application should be a matter between the applicant and the Minister. I don't readily understand why they would apply to the American authorities for an immigration check on this man.

Why should you be indignant? Does it bother you that much that there are illegals in America? If so, start reporting all the illegals. That should keep you busy for a great many years. :D

Passports use specialist printing processes. Embassy passports are hand written and some airlines won't accept them as proof of ID. Lots of countries will deny entry if you don't have a machine readable passport.

So basically if you lose a passport you have to go the Irish embassy to get a temporary one. Find an airline that will accept this as ID and fly home to Dublin.

This may have changed in recent times but it happened to a friend who lived in Austria in 2007. He ended up having to fly home specifically for it, maybe the larger embassies in NY or Boston would have equipment on site.

OP, if you're illegal, surely you can't travel in or out of the States, so why would you even need a passport?

    I stand corrected.

you could always get deported to Ireland and re-enter with a new passport with your name in Irish.

I'd presume those days are gone, now that everyone is fingerprinted on entry.

    Really? That's absolutely ludicrous!

I go to my embassy, fill out all the forms, pay the fee, give them the pictures.

They send everything off with diplomatic post, inside of 2 weeks (usually less) they ring I can come collect my new passport. The only way you could tell that it was issued outside the country is that it states it's been issued by the ambassador in Dublin.

Presuming however that the alien entered before the fingerprinting was introduced, they may start a fresh.

You get a full 10 year biometric passport. What your friend got was an emergency travel document. Presumably he had a flight booked and they couldn't turn around the passports quickly enough.

OP, just go to the embassy website and follow the instructions for losing a lost passport. They won't care about your (or whoevers) immigration status and they certainly won't call ICE on you (or whoever) even if you did confess to being illegal.

That would make sense. He got it issued for a flight to London and had no problem and presumed he could then fly to the US with the same one and only found out at short notice that it was invalid and had to make a mad dash to Dublin for a proper one.
