I think most of the slat rubber is in or around 50 euro a square metre plus vat not too sure. There are a few different ones now. Think kraiburg might be the cheapest. You have very big pens to cover it'll get into money

while rubber is good do you have a specific need for it?
    like feeding bulls?

going off the prices i got last year it will cost you the guts of 7k plus vat which i believe is reclaimable. The thrive would want to be good to justify it.

Since its a new build (and 7k extra for spending) should you consider an additional a bay or passageway/area for lying on?

there is also a 20 ft lie back for calves. Cows will be on the slats full time.
I am only going to cover 2 pens as the others will be used for weanlings etc and i can let them back on the straw. I was looking to matts as i will be breeding cows during the winter and i dont want them slipping nd getting broke up. I was quoted about 5500 for de whole shed? sound reasonable/

I personally think mats for suckler cows is madness. The rubbing off the bare concrete will leave their hooves in better order. I don't think mats will make slats any less slippery. I'd shove back creep gate and put it 10' of lyeback in with cows. Bull can mount them safely here and calves still have plenty of space

Agree with this Muckit. We got three pens matted here about four years back and although comfort was better for cows, hooves tended to grow faster on the rubber leading to foot problems the following summer.

Only for that the slats were over 20 years old and had become polished smooth and deadly slippery I couldnt have justified the cost. And unless you have the pens wedged with cows they will get very dirty....Ideally need lots of feet to keep them mats clean. So go with the lieback I reckon..
