Irish Reg in UK

I've got an Irish registration car in Glasgow with me that I brought over when I came to uni a couple of years ago. I'm now moving to London and don't really need a car there.

I could drive my car home and try to sell it there or try to sell it over here, it'd be a lot cheaper and a lot less hassle to get rid of it here. Does anyone know how much it is to change the plates in the UK, or would I be likely to get rid of it with Irish plates?

It's not really worth a lot, 2004 megane, so I'd rather not spend a lot of money getting it back to Ireland, if I'm hardly likely to break even.

    Thanks

    Hmm.
What would be the cost of brining it back to Ireland?
Glasgow to Stranrear is not too far. Ferry to Larne.
And then I'm not sure where is your family home in Ireland, but can't be that far. Then flight back to UK. You could probably close all this with 200 - 250 quid.

Surely difference in price of sale will be way bigger than that when selling in Ireland comparing to UK, so it should be well worth it if you have a free day.

Also unless you have a fully receipted and impeccable service record you will get nothing for it

How many miles are on the car and how much are you looking for it?

You can drive the Irish reg for total of 6 months in UK, then maybe go home for a holiday and sell the car then?

It's a 3-door 2004 Renault Megane Hatchback 1.6 VVT Dynamique. It's got just over 100,000 on the clock and has a few bumps and bruises. I think I'm going to end up taking it home and seeing what I can get for it there. Not overly worried about how much I do get, but I don't think I'll ship it here.

I don't think the DVLA recognises a further 6 months period where a person who has held a car while benefiting from the student extended exemption from registrations make a decision to remain after the end of their course.

OP: Have you taken on a permanent job in London? Might be best to make a decision what to do once you have transported your stuff down from Glasgow. It might only be anecdotal but I have noticed a marked reduction in the number of foreign registered cars in London over the past 5 years together with a greater public information programme about car seizures etc.

    Hi

Can any of you tell me for how long can I drive my Irish reg car in the UK before I have to re- register the car?

    Thanks in advance!

It doesnt cost anything to change the plates in the UK afaik. I drove my Irish car in the UK for 3 years with no bother only pulled once by a cop who sent me on my way after seeing my licence but I wouldnt do it today. I doubt the insurance was valid for starters if a claim happened.
