    Hey,

Does it matter if you take protein shakes before a workout or do you have to drink during a workout? Can anyone recommend good protein shakes and bars?

    Thanks :)

All that matters is you get your protein carbs and fat requirements at some stage during the day as far as results go . Nutrient timing makes so little difference its not worth talking about.

perfect thanks, i literally havent a clue....i am just starting so i am new to all this dietary requirements etc! just whenever i go to the gym eveyone seems to be drinking them but i would rather drink them before the gym and then just have water in the gym. i heard that if you take these protein shakes without proper exercise etc you will get really fat and that overall they are not healthy for you. Is this true?

Shakes are just a convenient source of protein. They have artificial sweeteners if thats what you consider unhealthy. And the only thing that makes you fat is a surplus of calories wherever they may come from .

It's pretty widely accepted that getting a decent, fast absorbing protein into you ASAP after exercise is a very good thing. Combine with some fast carbs for optimal awesomeness.

Protein shakes are just food in liquid form. Whoever is telling you that shyte about making you fat is a poorly informed nincompoop.

I looked at the lidl stuff, don't think most of it is great value tbf.

I agree its widely accepted by people who don't know what they are talking about. The post workout window is bs .

    Really? Please, do elucidate.

    Really? Please, do elucidate.

It being discredited as supplement company myth to drive overpriced carb powders. Most of the studies are done on runners and such who would deplete glycogen a lot more then someone lifting weights. Your diet 24 hours afterwards is more important.

Now this is based on being unassisted.

ok now i'm a bit cinfused! take protein shakes or not? take them pre/post workout?

Hmm. It's been said up to v recently on here by many. But overpriced carbs? Bag of dextrose is pretty cheap.

I think I'll keep doing it as it makes sense in my mind, and I'm generally ready for a refuel by that time.

I'm not convinced one 4000kcal meal, with all relevant macros, eaten at 0730 is going to be of the same benefit to me as those Kcals eaten throughout the day.

It's more stuff like wms or branded names like glycofuso or carbolic

Like dor said, it doesn't matter, your overall protein intake is the important bit. If you're not getting enough from other foods, take it, if you're getting enough, don't.

All too often in this context people simply forget / ignore the definition of the word supplement. Their purpose is to help fill a requirement where a deficit exists, if no deficit exists, no supplement is required.

There's nothing special in them, though they are incredibly convenient and often very nice. FWIW I take Optimum Nutrition - Strawberry Whey and it tastes great.

Most pseudoscience myths make sense at some level. Whichis why they get repeated over and over as fact.
Post workout is probably optimal but the difference probably tiny, and not worth worrying about.

You'll be digesting a 4000kcal meal for a while so its still spread out over a good part of the day.

    Are any of these nice
    http://ie.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/protein-muffin/10636988.html
    http://ie.myprotein.com/sports-nutrition/high-pro/10530459.html

2 euro a piece seems ok compared to what's in vending machines and stuff anyway and I'm gone off the homemade ones

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,512 ✭✭✭runawaybishop

Those muffins seem awfully high in sugars.

  • Posts: 0 CMod ✭✭✭✭ Cruz Mammoth Map

Yeah I think those are just normal muffins with a bit extra protein :p
    A halfway compromise
Might buy the sample bar and try it

I've the High Pro bars and tbh I don't reach for them very often. I have them in various places in case of unforeseen protein deficit. They're basically not very nice.

quest bars ftw by a million miles - http://www.iherb.com/search?kw=questbar&okw=quest&rank=1#p=1

Definitely go with quest bars! I get a couple of boxes at a time from iHerb, cheap delivery and really quick! They taste great and have no crap in them. I love the peanut butter and the vanilla almond crunch!

The one transform linked to above, that's the first time I've seen them but they look great, certainly compared to any other bar I've seen.

I might order 2 different flavours. Works out at about €45 for 24 bars (i think) shipped in 2-4 days.

Hi im a personal trainer and i would not recommend taking protein before training as it just sits on your stomach and doesn't get burnt up, if you want to take it before id suggest you take it about 2 hours beforehand so it has time to digest but the best time to drink the shakes is about 30 - 40 mins after training for max absorption and muscle repair. Also try and stick with whey protein as its the quickest to absorb :)

    Someone mentioned H&B protein...

Now whenever I've heard it mentioned its soon followed by, oh its rubbish protein, but its protein content is higher than USN 100% whey, I have had the H&B stuff seemed grand, just some of the flavours a bit sweet. Now its awful value but I just don't get all the hate...

But Bulkpowder is the way forward...

Its just very expensive. Even with the "buy one get another for 1 cent" offer its like 40% pricier than the major suppliers.

I said that but is there an proof that its an inferior protein

Not sure about the protein type, but it was a lower % than the major suppliers also.

edit: i think people also say its hard to mix and tastes nasty.
