I am going to get back into martial arts and have narrowed or down to jiu jitsu or kfm. which one do folks think would be best from a self defense perspective.

sweet. it's the original Japanese jiu jitsu.

I'd go with Jiu Jitsu personally.

KFM is just bad Thai boxing IMO. Elbows thrown by people who've never fought properly with elbows, training against people with no elbow defense. Just do Thai if you want to learn elbows properly.

So it'll only work on 99.9999% of the population of this country? Sounds bogey alright :P

So will windmilling with your head down.

Why not pack the Kali in and practice waving a knife wildly in the general direction of an opponent if you actually think learning quality systems is a waste of time then Bambi?

because I know theres a difference between duelling and self-defence? What does'nt work in arena may work fine another.

So your argument is essentially, whoever attacks you probably won't know martial arts so it doesn't matter if the system you train is any good?

The argument is that you judge a solution on whether it solves the problem it was designed to solve not some other problem

I live the same distance from Thurles as from Kilkenny. the Thurles kickboxing club teach keysi and the jiu jitsu is in the dragons lair club in Kilkenny. having studied shotokan for 10 years I have a kind of soft spot for Japanese martial arts.

Personally I'd be going with JJ from The Dragons Lair, and when it comes to most things striking in this forum I put a lot of weight on the opinion of Cowzerp and Peetrik.
