I've been wanting to try out one I heard. Push your finger against the spot on your forehead above your nose & between your eyes.
Hold it there for 5 seconds & then press your tongue against the roof of your mouth for a further 5 seconds. And alternate.

    If it works, hurray!

Pat your head and rub your belly for 15 seconds, wait 15 seconds then run anti-clockwise in a small circle 6 times. Finally, 10 star jumps.

Once this is done, you'll be too confused or out of breath to bother with hiccups.

Op, 'technically' I'm no longer allowed to practice medicine in Ireland, but I'm 100% sure you have TB.

To cure TB all you need to do is drink a bottle of tequila, in one sitting.

    Get well soon.

Get a big glass of water and take 20 consecutive sips. Works for me. Also drinking from the wrong side of the glass or yogic breathing.

    Help!

Have the hiccups all day non stop and I've tried various "cures" and nothing is working

    Any suggestions before I explode?

Go you do a little wee every time you hiccup?

If you do, then it's funny. :D

Breathe in, hold closed one nostril with your finger, breathe out and then deeply in again, switch to close the other nostril, breathe out and in slowly and deeply. Repeat for about ten breaths and ta-da, hiccup free.

    I hate the hiccups.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,299 ✭✭✭✭MadsL

    Stand up
    Arms behind your back
    Head up
Breathe in and out 3 times.
Exhale the last breath very very slowly
Concentrate on pushing gently down the diaphram and relaxing it.

    Works a charm.

sucking on a slice of lemon works. It's sour so put sugar on top and it works. Brown sugar is better but white will do too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 876 ✭✭✭RiverOfLove

The lemon seriously works. I'll give you 20 euro if it doesn't.

Found this about 5 years ago, works everytime
    http://www.cognitial.com/hiccups.shtml

Hiccups are caused by your diaphragm muscle spasming, this method forces you to stretch out the diaphragm leaving you Hiccup free.

A small dab of tomato ketchup under each nostril clears up hiccups in seconds.

I don't understand how everyone has so much trouble with this one, or how there's so many supposed *cures*

    Just swallow air!

It works for me everytime, and I can stop hiccups within 10 seconds. I don't know if people just have trouble with the technique or what but just take a breath, close your mouth and force air down your oesophagus - as if you are swallowing food. Repeat 2 - 3 times and it's gone!

A tea spoon full of sugar, just swallow it an try not to gag! Works every time for me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭franer1970

I always find I start hiccuping when I need to burp.
For me the key to preventing hiccups starting is to allow the burp out without hiccuping first.
Once the first or second hiccup has happened I'm locked in and it's too late for burping. I'll drink a large glass of water slowly without breathing or else alternate holding my breath / breathing quickly if that's not an option.
The need to hiccup/burp will happen to me dozens of times each day so prevention is definitely better than cure.
Can't find anything online about a link between burping and hiccuping - am I some freak of nature??

I didn't have the hiccups, but I tried this and still didn't, so it's safe to assume it works. If you do this, you won't hiccup. Fact. (sample size may be a little on the small size) On the less happy side, they do say getting the hiccups a lot is an early indicator of lung cancer..........sooo........yeah, i didn't like knowing that either.

    Tsk! That's the Devil's talk!

Wat you do is mix tincture of lithium and coal tar oil together in equal portions, and use a turkey leg to apply the mix to your backside.

The hiccups will be gone by the time you try and find these ingredients

Hold your breath for as long as you can, then inhale (without exhaling)
Then hold that for as long as you can, until you explode. Then it'll be gone.

I'm crap at explaining, but that always works for me!
