Hey, what's the best way to get to LA from San Francisco apart from renting a car? What's the train like? Thanks

My GF has taken it from Seattle to LA which is a lot further so she had a cabin. SF to LA is about 12 hours I think. The trains are good, you get assigned a seat with your ticket and its pretty comfy. There may be an observation car as well (glass roof). Obviously a lot slower than flying but I'd reccomend iit if you have the time. The route misses the spectacular scenery of Big Sur but it follows the coast into LA which looks pretty. What about doing the whole route and start in Seattle and get a cabin?

If you just wanna get there, and money is an issue, you can take the Greyhound. That's what I did (actually, I took it from San Diego to SF, so it was a couple of extra hours with a transfer in LA), and it was fine.

For some reason though, the whole west coast seemed to use the old white GH buses instead of the newer, nicer blue ones with the leather seats, wifi and plug sockets that I took in the northeast and the south.

I took it overnight too, so I slept most of the way.

All in all, the bus is the cheapest option, but you may not be willing to sacrifice the comfort aspect..? Lots of horror stories go around about Greyhound trips, but I took about 15 of them from different cities all over the US and there were no bad incidents. It obviously ain't high-roller though.
